Valve Slippage

I'm trying to find percentages on valve slippage on BCIR compared to K-Pouch. I found that Dr. Bauer in NY said he only has a 13% of valve slippage for the Koch Pouch, but I've heard others say it was 20%.

I can't seem to find the statistics online, anyone have any ideas?

They are up to date in most things with the BCIR. I have not experienced nor has the one other person that I personally know had any problems with valve slippage.

I believe most colorectal surgeries would have a 10% revision rate. No surgery can be guaranteed at 100%.

The Kpouch valve has come a long way since the late 70ies and it's ashame that new surgeons are not learning this techique.

I totally agree with Flemmart's above quote. Each day that I come here and read of person after person having a horrible day with skin problems, leaking appliances, intestinal blockages, body image because of the bag and on and on.

Some of you have no idea that there might be a better method out there because your surgeon is also in the dark on the subject of continent pouch. I had the same problems that I mentioned above for over twenty years. The intestinal blockages became unbearable over the years. In 1997 I had the continent pouch done and in over eleven years now I have not experienced one of the above mentioned problems.

I have a small stoma about 3/8” diameter that is flush with my stomach wall. I cover it with an AmPatch band- aid that is undetectable under cloths. I intubate with a catheter about three times a day. I can eat anything I want, although that being said it is just smart management of the bowel to not eat too much of certain things, but nothing is really off limits.

Now I must remind you that I am aware that this is not for everyone, and not everyone is a good candidate for this procedure. You must have a sufficient amount of small intestines to construct the internal reservoir.

I just wanted to let you know that I have experienced the good, bad and the ugly the same way that some of you are still going through. I just wanted to let you know that there is possibly a better way out there for you. I also must let you know that my only problem that I have had is “Pouchitis” which make’s me ill if I don’t take my Cripro. medicine. I will put up with that any day compared to the problems that I had for the first twenty years with an ileostomy.

I agree it depends on the person. I will tell you though my valve never slipped with BCIR in over a decade but did within 3 months with k-pouch.
