It is where you can send a message to a registered user on this discussion board. The message is sent within the system and is only read by the intended user. This is a convenient way to relay messages, though maintaining the anonymity that this board provides in not involuntarily giving out people's names and email addresses. So, think of it as an email service exclusive to the web-community that is the UOAA Discussion Board. Hope that helps! Out.

A private message is a message that one registered user sends another registered user without posting the message on the board. To send somebody a private message, click the "pm" button displayed in one of the person's postings or in the Memberlist. The recipient will see the message when they log on to the board.

Sending a private message ("pm" button) is one way to contact a user privately. Another way is to send them email by clicking the "email" button. But while every user displays a "pm" button, they don't all display "email" buttons. Only the users who select "Always show my e-mail address" in their profile display an "email" button. Clicking an "email" button produces a special form for emailing the person via the discussion board software.

When you send a "private message," the recipient doesn't see it until they log on to the discussion board. When you send email, the recipient sees it as soon as they check their regular email software, without having to log onto the discussion board.

Also note: even when people select "Always show my e-mail address," their actual e-mail address is still totally hidden; the "email" button doesn't really show the e-mail address, but produces only a special form for emailing the person through the discussion board software.
