skin on stoma

Post by rikki »

Lately i have what i would call a skin flap growing just inside my stoma of my Indiana pouch. it folds back out of sight for a while after draining and then comes back into sight after an hour or so. it is about half the size of my stoma opening and is just visible and causes no problem yet but i wonder what it is. My urologist didn't seem to know what it was and said as long as i could continue to catheterize with not problem to ignore it. Just wondered if any of you guys are familiar with this? I've read that some of you have a layer of skin that grows over the stoma and i hope this isn't happening.

an Indiana pouch is a piece of your colon that is cut to make a pouch inside you to collect your urine and then it is catheterized through a small opening several times a day. a lot of times it is after someone loses a bladder due to cancer or some illness. i lost my bladder shortly after birth but only went to the Indiana pouch in 2000

Sorry Rikki,
I have not encountered a skin flap with my stoma. I do think that as long as you can still cath to just leave it alone.

Anytime you have an issue with your stoma, I suggest having your urologist send you to a surgeon just to be sure that it's fine. Since all is working great, it's good to keep it that way.
