NEW BCIR SURGERY COMPLICATIONS?
I HAD MY BCIR SURGERY IN MAY. I GET BAD CRAMPING AND GAS. I WAS ON CIPRO FOR POUCHITIS BUT AS SOON AS I GET OFF OF IT, THE CRAMPING/GAS AND BLOATING COMES BACK. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM? NOT SURE IF IT IS CONSTANT POUCHITUS BECAUSE THE OUTPUT IS NOT ALWAYS LIQUIDY. JUST WISHING THINGS WOULD WORK OUT. IVE TALKED TO ALOT OF SATISFIED PEOPLE WITH THIS SURGERY BUT NOT ANY WHO HAD PROBLEMS. I AM SURE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE.
Re: NEW BCIR SURGERY COMPLICATIONS?
I, too, had these same difficulties after my BCIR surgery. What I have learned over the last 2 1/2 years is that there are foods that just don't agree with me anymore. Whether it has been an allergic reaction or just the inability to digest the food with the new system, I was challenged for a while and from time to time now. As it turned out, when I don't eat those difficult foods, I am just fine. I discovered that I have many to avoid. Perhaps you had sensitivities before and assigned them to something other than food sensitivities. It is surely a process of investigation. Don't give up. I took so much Cipro thinking it was Pouchitis but it was really stuff like chocolate and other foods.
Good luck and hang in there. Perhaps it would be a good idea to see a specialist who could help you determine the foods to avoid. Hugs, Dahlia

Re: NEW BCIR SURGERY COMPLICATIONS?
Hi...so sorry your continent ileostomy is causing you some issues. Typical pouchitis is constant protuse liquid output requring very frequent interbations - many inbetween meals - sort of like you have a flu bug. If you have some solid output at times, I tend to think it's not pouchitis.
Dahlia is right - many foods just cause the stool to be loose, you need to keep a food journal and start eating bland and then adding food one by one. You may have to follow a diverticulitis type diet (low fiber) to settle your pouch down.
But, also, some medications cause loose stools - so not sure if you're on any for other medical reasons. You may need to check the list of possible symptoms and see if diarrhea is included.
The good thing I don't mind with my kock pouch is while I still get crampy and gas - I don't have to run to the bathroom and have accidents. Although my UC is gone, I still think I get inflammation from many foods causing havok on the pouch.

Also, don't forget to try immodium. Alot of pouchers take it daily to help thicken output. And, they make one with added antigas!
