Kidney Stone

I went for my yearly kidney ultrasound last Fri and during it the tech asked me if I ever had a kidney stone. I told years ago, and I have also seen gravel, but not in a long time. I asked her if she saw something, but of course she ignored my question because they can't tell you if they see anything. So Mon. I got the call that yes, I do have a pretty significant size kidney stone, but since my doctor is away this week, I won't find out till next week what will happen. Anyone else have or had stones that were/are too big to pass? What did they do?

I haven't had one, but my husband gets them. It depends on where it's located. They can sometimes laser to help break them down, and there is medication. If you start running a fever - then they may admit you into the hospital to see if an IV drip can help it pass. Try to use a urine mesh catch, so you can see if it passes. His passed right before surgery to put in a stent. Most can pass - try not to worry.

Thanks for responding. I guess it is too big to pass on its own. I'll find out Tuesday what I need to do.

How big was your stone Did it pass on its own. My last CT scan showed 2 stones in my right kidneyt [the largest being 7.7mm] and 3 small stones in my left kidney [approximately between 2-3mm] My new urologist just wants to do a "wait and see approach" to see if they will pass on there own. One of my previous urologists did ESWL [extra corperal shock wave lithotripsy] to the kidney stones that I had. Looking at a ruler, I can't imagine passing a 7.7mm stone. My concern is these stones may drop down into the pouch and never come out. I don't know which urological approach is most benefical. Any thoughts?

I don't remember how big they said it was. I had another ultrasound this past Nov and I guess it has gotten smaller- probably bits of it broke off and they came out on their own. I now have numerous little stones in both kidneys, but as long as things are not obstructed we are just going to leave things be. From time to time I get very sharp pains in my kidneys and I just assume it is the stones making themselves known. I have not had to go to the ER for it as yet, but my doctor told me if the pain ever gets unbearable and does not go away I will know it is the stones and go to the ER.
