scar tissue arond stoma
I have a indiana pouch. There is so much scar tissue around the stoma, that i am having a terrible time getting the catheter in. I bleed every time I cathertize. I had repair surgery but now the scar tissue is worst. Does anyone have any suggestions? thank you
Re: scar tissue arond stoma
Hi Lois,
My first thought would be to use some lubricant on the tip of the catheter. It should make it go in easier. I am sure some of the others on here may have better advice, but that is my opinion.
good luck

Re: scar tissue arond stoma
Hi Lois
I have a stoma in my naval to cath thru to empty my bladder. I to have had surgery to remove the scar tissue and am finding it is not helping much 6 months down the road. My urologist is trying every thing he can think of to keep the stoma clear from the scar tissue, mine is closing at the skin level. He ordered a 12-fr Speedicath Compact which is a short catheter to place in the stoma and tape down over night, It is a new catheter made by colopast. The problem I had was I leaked 3 times in the bed before I could get up. I have a bladder augmentation, which means I have a very large bladder leaking at night is rare for me. Urine retention is more of a problem for me. I still can not figure out why it leaked. SO...recently I taped the catheter down in a bent upward position and SO FAR.....SO GOOD Dry beds!! It is easier in getting the catheter through the stoma for about 2 days if I do this procedure every night.
I do not understand why it would leak, am trying to figure that one out
However, there are studies being done to try and help with stoma stenosis. MANY PEOPLE with urinary diversions do struggle with scar tissue closing the stoma
I hope this helps you, feel free to pm me if you want.
Hang in there,
Sal

Re: scar tissue arond stoma
I've had my K-pouch for 4 months (HAD A j-POUCH PRIOR TO THIS FOR 16 YEARS) and have had surgeon cut open my stoma opening twice already! it just seems to want to scar closed! very frustrating
plus last week I had to have a hernia repair-just above stoma.
So as of now, I'm not too happy with this pouch-that's a lot of interventions in only 4 months. Plus my belly is never pain free totally-pressure, gas like pain frequently. AND it's hard to get the catheter into the pouch!! I have to lie down 1st on my side, then roll to my back-sometimes takes a while. Has it moved to a new spot?? never has been easy.
I can't imagine traveling with this thing. Has anyone? tiny bathrooms in plane!-uncertain schedules? too bad, as I'd just retired and was looking forward to seeingt Italy and Paris for the 1st time.
2 nights ago a flat red raSH APPEARED ON MY BELLY-R LOWER SIDE -CLEARED UP A BIT BY MORNING, BUT APPEARED LAST NIGHT AFTER SHOWER (COOL WATER)-& IT'S SPREAD& NOW COVERS BOTH SIDES OF LOWER ABCOMEN-NOT ITCHY.
HELP!! I FEEL LIKE MY BODY IS GETTING REALLY REALLY WEIRD!
ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
OF COURSE THIS IS A HOLIDAY, SO PROBABLY WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE ER, WHICH I DON'T WANT TO DO CAUSE THEY ARE CLUELESS ABOUT THESE POUCHES
HELP!

Re: scar tissue arond stoma
I have a pouch and at first I thought I would never be able to travel. But u can. I have a foldable square that I put over toilet seat. Clean with a small can of lysol after. Put everything on it ,use hand santizer and cath. If there is a famliy bathroom I use it as they have a baby changer in and sometimes a sink.I take a large bag and everything goes in it. If i am going for the day everything goes in my large handbag. also take paper towels. I also got a rash and wash with warm water after every cath. it cleared up. I also had repair surgery for scar tissue and it is back and also hurts when i cath. but i don't want a bag so i am having repair surgery again. hang in there . you will be able to cath anywhere in a couple more months. i know ist is hard but it gets easier.
