New Continent Ileostomy?

Post by ema384 »

Hello,
I am new to this board; I am in my 20s and I am in the process of meeting with surgeons before having an ileostomy done. I will be seeing a different surgeon next week, to determine if I am a candidate for a continent ileostomy (I believe it would be the kock pouch-it is the type that would have to be drained with a catheter every so many hours). Before seeing the doctor, I am looking to have a few questions answered, so that I know what things to make sure I discuss with him.
First of all, the first surgeon I saw said that not many surgeons are doing continent ileostomies anymore, as "they have tons of problems", but he did admit that they work for some people, and it is worth looking into. What are some of the common problems? This surgeon did not say, as he does not perform this type of ileostomy.
Does the (internal) pouch have to be drained overnight?
What happens if the pouch is NOT drained right on schedule? Does stool "just" leak out, or are there worse issues that can occur?
If this type of surgery is done and has many issues, what is done next? Is it possible to try to revise it, or is a "typical" ileostomy the only next step?
Is it possible to have a continent ileostomy done withOUT removing the colon? What happens if the colon remains in the body?
Thank you very much for your help!

I may be getting to this too late but i have had a Kock pouch since 1991 and I love it. i did have some problems with parastomal hernias and did have to have the stoma moved after a few years but since then no problems. i would not give up my pouch for anything. i had a conventional ileostomy for 31 years and prefer the Kock pouch hands down. i think there are problems with all these revisions. i know someone who had a j pouch and had so much trouble she went back to a conventional pouch. I hope this helps.

The problem with a kock pouch is that many hospitals and drs' are not familiar with it. I've have had mine for 30 yrs and love it, but for example I was just in the hospital for diar and I had to explain to each group of nurses all day long.

I would do a jpouch, first to be honest, and if it failed, certainly would do a kpouch. They both have pros and cons. It's a big decision but most important thing is finding a surgeon who is trained in the kock pouch.

Research all you can and ask many questions. Another forum has alot of information with all three ostomies (ileostomy, jpouch and kock pouch).

good luck!
