chronic infections

Post by LisaB »

I'm frustraaaated! I keep getting these uti's with fevers, flank pain, bleeding and just plain feeling yucky. I irrigate, use a new cath each time, am meticulous about hand washing and have tried daily antx, which just leads to yeast issues.
Any suggestions? Please?

Lisa,

I also have trouble with infections. My pouch is 11 years old now and i have gone through regiment of antibiotics, yeast infections, anti fungals, etc.
I now use new catheters each time and irrigate 2 - 3 time a week with an antibiotic solution and sometimes still get infections. At this point in time
my Infectious Disease Specialist and I are discussing the possibilty that the bacteria is coming from the Colon itself. If the next culture comes back
positive for E-Coli we will schedule and Pouchoscopy to examine the inside of the pouch for any irregularities. When you have an infection do you
have a urine culture done. If not I think you should because you want use the antibiotic which the bacteria is most sensitive to.

Best regards,

My pouch is 18 years old and finally have gone 8 months now without an infection! This is a new record for me. I guess all I can ad is to try to drink lots of fluids to help keep things flushed and to also try to keep your urine acidic with diet. Stay away from things that will make it alkaline like citrus fruits. I used to be in the hospital with infections almost every month and over the years they just naturally became farther and farther apart.

I get infections all the time but rarely run a fever or experience flank pain. I am prone to kidney stones. I believe that the stones cause many of my infections but the urologists say they do not believe this is the case. These chronic infections weaken me physically and also seem to cause me to become hypotesive. I have begun bulding up a resistance to certain antibiotics--cipro being one of them. I worry all the time.
