New with BCIR question
My doctor has recommended a temporary ileostomy for a nonrelaxing puborectalis (anismus) and chronic constipation. He is making it temporary because I am only 29, and I may want to go back if I were to end up with unexpected problems as bad or worse than I have now. Anyway, I read about the BCIR procedure and was wondering if it could be done without actually removing the colon. I saw it could be reverted to a traditional ileostomy, but I could not find anything that said whether it could be reverted completely as a temporary ileostomy could.

I would call Susan Kay at Palms of Pasadena Hospital for the answer to your question. Her number is on the web site BCIR.COM

Re: New with BCIR question
The main drawback - in a scenario of having an internal pouch created temporarily - is that they reconfigure part of your small intestine to make the pouch. But I don't believe they have figured out a way to put it all back together into its normal tubular form, if you were to no longer want any kind of stoma. Your digestive system would end up being shorter than it is now, and the portion that would be missing would be the terminal ileum where absorption of some essential nutrients occurs.

Thanks for the replies. That makes sense about the small intestine, but I will call just to see. Right now, I'm also questioning the benefits vs risks for a whole ileostomy given my circumstances, so I'm looking to find out as much as I can beforehand. Thanks again!
