trying to gather as much info as possible on K-Pouch

Post by mksmia »

Hi,
I am trying to get as much information on K-Pouch whether it be good or bad as I can. I have severe pelvic floor dysfunction & colonic inertia, basically been told eventhough it's not diseaased persay my large intestine does not work (nerve damage). Anyway the next step is an illeostomy, I found a dr. not too far from where I live that does K-pouches and said this would work for me. Now I know alot of drs. are not doing this procedure much any more because of the operation where you take the small bowel and attach it directly to the rectum. Which is wonderful if that would work for me, but it won't because the rectum and lrg. colon as not functionally. The reason for my post is I'd like to hear from people who actually have the K-pouch and could share anything with me so I know what I would be getting into. I was so excited when I found this physician b/c at first I was told no one in the PHiladelphia area did this procedure. So my fear is if I get in a situation years down the road this man will already be retired what do you do? And one thing I didn't ask is how long can a k pouch last? Kind of like a prosthetic knee joint you used to get 20 years now they last longer. Is there a time limit on this or you either get lucky and never have a severe problem or not. Any information that can be given to me I would really appreciate it, since I found this dr. on my own through this site my regular GI dr. is withholding her opinion and I'm kind of on my own. I'm 53 in good health other than the obvious and this procedure sounds like a good send. I'm not putting down conventional illeostomies if that is what I end of with so be it, this procedure just intrigued me, and I thought it sounded like a great alternative, just it seems it isn't the operation of choice these days so afterwards who will take care of me if I experience complications. Thank you for all information provided. Karen P.S. I have to try to schedule by May b/c I may be losing my insurnace by June 30th due to impending job loss.
