surgeons/gastroenterologist

Post by cathsoso »

:?: Is there a list of surgeons and gastroenterologists by location experienced in BCIR? I understood it was being compiled at Palms of Pasadena but am unable to find it. All help is much appreciated.

thanks

There are only two surgeons currently performing the BCIR. One is at the Palms and the other is at Olympia in Los Angeles. Look at the web site ... qla-ostomy.org ... under "ostomy options" for the list of surgeons familiar with the Kock from which the BCIR was modeled. As to Gastro Doctors, many should have heard or studied the Kock pouch in school, you have to ask your own Doctor if they are familiar with a pouch system.

I was interested specficially in BCIR drs as well. I emailed the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio a few months ago asking if they did the BCIR and they said they did. Bcirray, have you heard something about them no longer doing them then?

There is only one BCIR and it is done in Florida (Palms of Pasadena) or California (Olympia). CC may say they do it but in reality there version is the Kock pouch.

Ah ok thank you for clearing that up. I asked them in my message about both and they weren't clear in their reply then. That is very important for me to know as I really was more interested in the actual BCIR, unless CC does the modified K pouch which I heard is virtually the same thing as the BCIR (please correct me if I'm wrong.) I may have to send them another message about it.

Hi, Cleveland Clinic does not do a BCIR or has modified the KP to mirror the BCIR. It is not the same thing. CC uses the KP mesh valve and BCIR has a living collar. Someone on the boards started saying this and not sure where they got their information. Both are continent ostomies and have success stories. Best in your surgery.

Thank you for the additional information Flemmart. I don't have to ask CC and wait for an answer now on the modified k pouch. I did a lot of research on this board and some other about the K pouch and BCIR- I don't know anything about the misinformation going around, but I just saw CC in the list of dr's that did continent ostomy surgeries (but the list doesn't say specifically which ones). So I emailed them and it sounded like from what they wrote back that they did all of them. If I can find the email, I'll post it- I understand that is incorrect info now but just so you all can see where the confusion came from , if anyone is interested and got a similar response from them.

The BCIR uses a living collar valve, while the KP type of valve has been modified from the old mesh valve and that what may be the confusion. But, they remain completely different valves but other then that, stomas are flat, we interbate (empty internal pouch) with a catheter, etc.
