Greenish mucus from continent urinary pouch

Post by squid56 »

Has anyone had greenish mucus coming from their urinary continent pouch? I don"t have any fever, this has been going on for about a week or so and I also have been passing these weird looking blood ,mucus things that are almost hard. The whole thing is new, in all my years of having this since 1992. I no longer see a urologist since mine is far away and now in his 80's.

You might have stones in your pouch or kidneys. Blood is usually a sign of stones, pouchitis or a brewing infection. My Kock urinary pouch actually has metal staples in it. Every once in a blue moon a staple starts to detach and stone formation begins. I usually get sharp pains when this happens. The amount of mucus in my pouch increases when I don't cath often enough thus letting the volume go quite high, or don't drink enough or if I am experiencing an increase in colonization prior to a full blown infection. Increase your fluid intake. Track down a urologist who will run some tests on your pouch.

I have never had green buggers in my pouch, but the white ones can repeatedly clog my cathers with the thickest and stringiest strands that can defy irrigation. My last right kidney lithotripsy resulted in a couple of grey clumps of mucus.

Best of luck.

Peggy, thanks for the reply! I saw that you have had your pouch since 1986- that's when I had my bladder taken out and was given an ileal conduit. I had so many troubles with it even had it revised and I still had problems so I was converted to my internal pouch in 1992. I also have staples, but I think my pouch spit out most of them years ago. I also get the same type of mucus as you at times- it will clog the catheter and at times it does turn odd colors like grey. I do have stones lodged in my kidneys, but so far things are status quo, except for these weird things that have been coming out of me. I guess I am just in a waiting game till something else occurs.

If you haven't been to the doctor yet Squidd, it's time, nothing good about green - ever! Many people with Indiana Pouches irrigate their pouch with Sterile Water - I would recommend that you do this a few times a day, this will clean out your bladder of any excess mucous, but will not get to kidney stones. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Nita, I can not irrigate as it sets off horrible spasms in my pouch. I had my bladder removed due to IC, and I have been told by my uro that I have IBS in the pouch which causes the spasms.I did pass a tiny stone about 2 weeks ago and had a kidney ultrasound done, but have not yet gotten the results of it. I am sure if there was something really amiss I would have heard.

The mucus in my pouch is increasing and if large gobs come out on the tip of my catheter they do have a celery yellow-greenish hue. I am fighting dehydration with the high temperatures we are currently experiencing.

Squid, I also get the occasional bladder spasm on the rare occasions when I irrigate. I hate the sudden and intense pain when it occurs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_hjP8Skw4w or search for How to catheterize an Indiana Pouch

check out this YouTube video, it might be helpful for you as a review to watch how this woman self caths - it is critical to completely empty your pouch, notice how she reinserts the catheter and pushes on her belly to get ALL the urine out. A cough or huff can also help release any mucous that might get stuck in the catheter. .

Can you take an anti-spasmotic before irrigating? and/or only do it say 3 x week?
Do you drink 4-6 oz cranberry juice daily? shown to help.

Good luck!
