Lomotil

Post by ot dave »

I had my parastomal hernia repaired at the end of July. Prior to my surgery, I was able to easily get 24 hours output free. If I used Immodium and controlled my intake, I could go 48 hours without output. I think that the hernia created just enough of a "kink" in the plumbing to allow for this "success". Since my repair (which gave me back my symmetry and the ability to wear some previously unwearable clothes, plus, I can tuck my shirt in again!), I have had trouble getting to the 24 hour mark, even with the use of the immodium. I will profess, that my stools prior to ostomy were always loose. I have never experienced natural constipation. I have had food pass within a 12 hour time frame, so my transit time is pretty fast.
I just had a check up with my surgeon and I asked for a prescription for Lomotil to see if that would get me back to a 24+ hours...
He and I agreed to only use it situationally for things like early morning hunts, travel, etc.
Just wondering if any of my fellow gators have used this and what your experiences were. The pharmacist said that it was quite a bit more potent than immodium, so I'm hoping it will slow down my transit time some. Going camping this weekend with my son's Boy Scout Troop, and I am going to try it out and see how/if/what dose works best for me.
Appreciate any input.

After a year of getting 24 hours after irrigating, I've been having a lot of early and late returns. I was wondering if "that funny lump that appears when I cough" is a hernia and maybe IT was causing the problems. Interesting to see you have the opposite theory!

Of course, both theories could be true.

Well, the Boy Scout campout was cancelled as it was too cloudy and rainy to ride in the airplanes (aviation camp).
But, I went hunting instead, and gave the Lomotil a try. Good news! I was able to get 24 hours plus without output with only one pill (I can take up to 4 a day). So, looks like I have an assistive device to use when I need to be at least 24 hours clear. Glad to have that control back....
