Difficulty getting water in with some back flow last two weeks

Post by Kmartin3 »

I've been irrigated about a year now, and all of a sudden recently have had difficulty getting water to be accepted into the colon. Thought I was constipated, so took stool softer, and I'm now looser. However I am still getting the problem with resistance to the water going in, and then some backflow into the device. It feels like my stoma goes inside and I lose the connection. Would this be a physical problem with each either my post surgery stoma or the irrigation kit?

The top of the water in a full irrigation bag is 50 inches above my stoma. Might yours be too low, with too little pressure for constant forward flow and allowing back flow into the tubing?

Several things have caused this situation for me.
Are you on any new medications. Some meds will cause some constipation that will make it difficult to get the water to enter the colon.
Sometimes I will have to adjust the angle of the cone, this was particularly necessary when I had my hernia. If I didn't have the right angle, the tip of the cone would be closed off by the wall of the stoma.
Height of the irrigation bag could be an issue.
Water temperature has been an issue for me. If too cold, the stoma tends to constrict, not allowing water to flow.
Are you pushing the tip of the cone in too far maybe? I know when I'm concentrating on something else during the irrigation, I will occasionally push too hard, thus blocking the tip with the wall of the stoma.
Stress can cause these issues. Try to relax your abdominal muscles during the process. And, I know it sounds hokey, but it works for me, "envision" your stoma opening up and the water going in.

Those are the main things that happen to me when I can't get the water to go in during irrigation. Hope you find an answer.

about warm water...you can have too much of a good thing.
I read that hot water works best, so I've been using the hottest I can (it's comfortable, not painful). However, I noticed a marked reduction in wear time for my 2-piece system, and I eventually figured out I'm melting it off.

So some is good, but more is not necessarily better.
