Having problems cutting wafer
I am having problems with cutting my wafer to fit. I have a hernia on top of my illeostomy so it is hard to get a flat bag to go on a round surface. Also my stoma tends to prolapse which makes cutting it very difficult. It is an oblong stoma. Having trouble cutting oblong shape. How can I make a good guide. I looked on u tube video for oblong stomas and cutting wafer and couldn’t find any videos. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Re: Having problems cutting wafer
Do you really love the system you are using? If you are willing to try something else, look at the moldable wafers. Convatec makes the one I use( Durahesive moldable) and I think Hollister has just introduced a moldable. Basically, you start with a hole smaller than the stoma and then roll it out with your thumb to the size you need or even a little larger (it will retract and hug the stoma in a few minutes). You can shape it into the oval you need and it doesn't have to be exact, it will conform to your shape. I also have a hernia so know what you are talking about. Good luck!

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
The CyMed microskin wafer can be an ideal solution for a rounded abdominal surface where there is a hernia. The wafer is composed of a tissue-paper thin material similar to TegaDerm or DuoDerm (the clear adhesive applied over an IV site). This allows the wafer to conform intimately to every dip or crease or fold or protuberance. It’s pretty unique.
I use CyMed as I love its ultra-low profile and minimalism. It is like wearing no wafer or pouch.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
I have no idea how well it works, but it might be worthwhile to look at Coloplast's newest product in their Sensura Mio line which is specifically intended to fit over hernias or other outward bulging areas. An interesting aspect of this product is that Coloplast calls it by a different name in the United States than in other countries. In the US, they call it "Sensura Mio Convex Flip" but in other countries they call it "Sensura Mio Concave." See a description (on Coloplast's US website) at https://www.coloplast.us/global/ostomy/ ... flip-page/

Bob’s suggestion of the Coloplast Mio Flip is ideal.
I get samples from Coloplast in the design stage as part of their early customer feedback process. I had opportunity to see the Mio Flip and try it. The Mio Flip is shaped like a Star-fish. The indentations allow the wafer to intimately conform to a rounded surface. The wafer is ultra-soft and flexible while providing for a small rigid “bowl” for needed convexity.
The Mio Flip is pretty unique as far as an option for a rounded hernia or rounded abdomen where you also have a flush or low profile stoma that may retract or plays hide and seek.
Thank, Bob, for providing the link to the Mio Flip.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
Those are good suggestions, but she would still have the problem of cutting the hole to fit.

Gingermom-
I also have an elliptical shaped stoma for which I made a plastic pattern to trace the shape on the flange. If you can send me an accurate outline of the cut you want, I will try and make a plastic pattern for you.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
The moldable wafers conform to any shape stoma without cutting. But they can roll right over a flush or recessed stoma, so they're best for "outies".texazgal wrote: 2019-03-07 12:58:20 Those are good suggestions, but she would still have the problem of cutting the hole to fit.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
I too have a prolapsed oblong stoma. I made trial templates using old credit cards. It was a trial and error process but I finally got a template that I liked and have used it ever since. I just place the template over the wafer, outline the hole with a marking pen and cut with curved scissors. Saved me a lot of frustration over the years.
Re: Having problems cutting wafer
Oblong here also. My wafers have a plastic backing to peel off to expose the adhesive side, After cutting the hole to your liking save the plastic backing it makes a great template.

Bob Webtech,
Cool -- that Coloplast Mio Flip! I had not seen it before. My abdomen remains quite distended even though surgery was Nov. 1. I'm drinking Lactaid milk or almond milk and avoiding other dairy products. My GI doc and I are stumped. I'm not eating anything that would cause a lot of gas. And my ileostomy is DEFINITELY functioning. So much so that I'm using Immodium to slow it down. Finally bought a CVS brand of Immodium and hope it works.
And, sigh, I often wear an irrigation sleeve under slacks because of so much output.Within 2 hours, a pouch is filled (not a high output pouch -- still need to try that -- but I think that would fill up in 3 hrs and I'm giving up on filters). Not thrilled with Coloplast's locking mechanism -- very high profile -- but I am not wearing clothes that are tight yet anyway. Prefer Convatec's sturdy irrigation sleeves to any other manufacturer but this flexible, star-shaped wafer sure seems as though it would help with leakage. Good video here. https://www.coloplast.us/global/ostomy/ ... ate_462736
Thanks again!

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
I am almost 5 weeks post-op with temporary ileostomy.
My stoma is a loop, and shaped like a kidney bean. Dealing with leaks and I change the bag every other day.
After 3 visits to the Wound Clinic I found that one
Piece Coloplast works best for me. I called them and
Requested free samples and they Fed-Ex me a big box
within a few days.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
I use the Hollister soft convex cut to fit.
The backing has a cutting guide already on it. Circular, but I use the guide so I cut within one circle left to right, another top to bottom, and end up with oval hole.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
Byram will custom cut wafer holes at no cost. Just provide them the dimensions in mm of the base of your stoma.

Re: Having problems cutting wafer
Have you tried using body heat and warming up the wafer prior to cutting it? My Stoma Nurse told me body heat is our friend.
