I have had my Kock Pouch for over 40 years. During that time the only significant issue has been blockage due to adhesions. During the past three weeks I have been experiencing pain around my stoma. The pain and associated pressure feels as if it is coming from within my pouch. I have also been experiencing pain in my right groin area and periodically in the right lower back. It is not obvious to me, or my doctor, if there is a connection between the pressure in my pouch and groin area. Periodically my pouch is distended (not due to gas) My doctor has scheduled an ultrasound procedure. I am able to empty my pouch in a normal manner.
Wondering if anyone has experienced a similar situation? Thanks.
Darrell

Re: Stoma Pain
Sassie, after multiple physician referrals I just found out I have a parastomal hernia, approximately 1.7cm in size. The hernia was identified in an ultrasound. However, due to the location, there is some question regarding the actual size of the hernia. It is located underneath my stoma, in a position that makes it difficult to distinguish between the hernia and the opening of my stoma. I consulted with three physicians and all agree that surgery is not necessary at this time (or maybe ever). I can resume all activities, including exercise (running, gym, etc.). The pain and discomfort I initially experienced has subsided. As you might expect, I remain very vigilant regarding any discomfort with my pouch.
As a point of reference, I am a 73 year old male and have had my pouch for 44 years. I spent a considerable amount of time researching a parastomal hernia. It seems this type of hernia is more often found in newer pouches. I am more than happy to respond to any specific questions I may have not answered in my response.
