Rectal mucus discharge and back pressure

Post by CEE ESS »

I have an ileostomy and experience frequent discharge. For about a week, I have been having arthritic pain possibly triggered by a panic attack and depression, preventing me from sitting so I have been spending a lot of horizontal time. When I do stand and bend over or sometimes while using the toilet, I pass mucus. I have had pain in one buttock that I've been treating with heat, and thought at first that the pain was spreading to my tailbone area.

But this afternoon it feels more like the pressure of needing a bowel movement. Can lying in bed retard the passage of mucus? I have sometimes noticed pressure followed by mucus, but am so full of worry about other health issues that I can't think straight. Looking for some help.

well I think this is normal, and I know I am having mucus discharge, just that with all the other stuff going on everything gets blurred so I can't tell what is what. I have previously noticed that sometimes I feel like I need a bowel movement and later will pass mucus. I was really just looking for reassurance. I have been visiting and calling my doctor quite a bit recently and most of my worry boils down to anxiety

Feeling like you need to have a bowel movement and then what comes out is mucus is really normal, I do the same daily....

You really do want that mucus to come out, so sorry your feeling so stressed...

Yes, it's due to diversion colitis and many of us ostomates get it. Do a search here in the discussion group for rectal mucous. Many folks wash out their rectums. Some take enemas with fatty acids but it's unclear that works. Your rectum is no longer getting healthy short-chain fatty acids found in stool which is diverted to your pouch. Your rectum reacts with inflammation. Normally, it's not harmful but can be a major inconvenience.

It's not due to anxiety and is real. I hope you find a way to manage your anxiety. Stress never helps. Perhaps try meditation? Listen to music? Even if you are lying down, you may be able to do some exercises with your legs and arms. That helps. If you possibly can walk, do so!
