Do you have an ileostomy and use Nu-Hope 40-72xx series pouches? I do and I'd like to know if I'm alone is this world...
I've been using Nu-Hope pouches for 13 years - since my initial ileostomy surgery without any real problems. There have been the occasional "normal" kind of pouch leaks, when stool forces itself under the foam and separates the pouch from your skin. For me, unless something is going on with my skin or stoma, I can depend on 4 days' of wear before risking this kind of breech. And that's fine. But the leaks I'd like to discuss are different: Leaks from the pouch structure itself.
The backside of these pouches now have a flocked (felt-like) backing. If you've been using them for a long time, you might remember that up until 2 or 3 years ago, the backing was a perforated, "ventilated", vinyl material. I believe the timing of my problem coincides with that of the backing switch-over...
Nu-hope pouches are constructed with a thin but rigid piece of plastic between the pouch and the foam. This piece is called the "shield". All three layers have the appropriately sized stoma hole, and they are aligned and fastened together via heat (I'm sure) and maybe also with an adhesive. I'm calling this "the weld"
Now, for 2½ or 3 years, an average 3 in 10 of the brand new Nu-Hope pouches I put on, develop a leak ON TOP of the foam. It happens late on day 2 or into day 3 when liquid from the stool seeps through the weld, wets the shield and/or back lining, and gets absorbed by the top of the foam. I can manage a work-around with some Eakin material and duct tape to hold off changing until day 4, but some things can begin to smell and others will have gotten soiled.
I've already been in touch with Nu-Hope and even sent them a faulty pouch. They said they'd found the problem, and sent me some replacements from a "fixed" batch. Unfortunately those are leaking the same way.
I don't want to rat on Nu-Hope, but hopefully, IF YOU'RE HAVING THE ISSUE,TOO, then we (I
Would love to hear from you!
Oh, Happy New Year!
