Something New in Nursing Education?

Post by To Dream a Dream »

Our area NE Pennsylvania news station showed a story about the challenges faced by local nursing programs due to the current pandemic. I was amazed to see that one of the manikins (representing a human patient) lying in a hospital bed had a longitudinal scar in the center of its torso & a stoma on its left abdomen. Is this something new in nursing education or am I way behind the times as usual? Something to be applauded at any rate.

I think there may be more inclusion of ostomy education across the board. At my last doctor office visit (pre-COVID) I mentioned to the freshly minted PA that I had an ileo and she started telling me all the medication precautions we needed (I usually have to explain why I don't want meds that cause more output or have diuretic effect). I made sure to let her know how impressed and happy I was with her.

When I did my phlebotomy training in 2010 we worked with dummies to learn some other skills and the dummies had ostomies back then as well.

MY wife got her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate a few years ago and they received training on how to change an ostomy pouch.
