Is shrimp safe to eat with an ileostomy?

Post by joshua1969 »

My husband had and ileostomy on Jan 13th. We have avoided all kinds of foods in fear of an obstruction. My husband has lost weight since his surgery and i was wondering if he could could eat shrimp with an ileostomy. He loves seafood but aside from fish we have stayed away from it for fear of an obstruction. Any and all help is appreciated.

I've had an ileostomy for close to nine years, and I eat shrimp with no problems. Cold shrimp dipped in cocktail sauce, and shrimp scampi, and all of that stuff. Just remember, always chew well, don't swallow big pieces. And I am usually always sipping a drink. Small bites, chew really well, sip a beverage. It will take time to feel comfortable with eating. There is quite a long learning curve in getting used to living with the ileostomy. Slow and steady. Don't be discouraged because you have to go slowly, things will get better one day at a time, slowly but surely.

Also remember the system is still healing after less than six weeks! As time goes by you may find all sorts of foods. I have 35+ years and eat pretty much anything I want. Some things I choose not to, mostly because it's not worth the hassle. Celery .... Anything really fibrous needs to be chewed up really well. I eat lots of veggies and salads which may not go well for your husband now.

Try things a bit at a time. Small amounts and see how it goes. Best in the new journey!

I've also had no problem -- but agree: CHEW. Shrimp is high in cholesterol so if that's an issue, stay clear or eat it moderately. Enjoy!

When it comes to any food, introduce slowly then observe for any changes. of course, you have to wait for said food to travel your entire digestive tract, but your patience should be rewarded. And chew thoroughly, up to 28 chews if you can stomach it (pun intended).

One thing my ostomy nurse said was if it caused problems before surgery (diarrhea, bloating, etc), it will do the same after surgery.

Excellent advice. Good to see you posting again. I tend to drink hot tea with anything that might stick.

Dear Sinfulsot, Since you are a punster (as I apologetically am too), I wonder what you make of "asphyxia" in your poem?
