Scheduled for colostomy surgery this coming Tuesday. Had my pre-op appointment and the surgeon implied that he had intended to also remove the rectum. My surgery is Not related to bowel disease, but rather to sphincter related incontinence issues. Originally, I thought the rectum was going to be left intact, so I questioned the sergeon, and we did talk about rectal stump discharge. He explained both options. I understand that if the rectum is removed, the discharge will be non-existent. But, then he went on to explain how the removal of the rectum would affect the small intestines positioning along with the pelvic floor.
Does anyone have info for me that might help with my final decision, especially from the female perspective? I also, understand that adhesions could also become an additional concern should I choose to have the rectum removed as well.
Thanks All, and wish me Luck.

Re: PROS/CONS of rectum removal
Having had years of previous extensive small bowel & colon resections and perianal fistulae before I ever had ostomy surgery (with the wrap up removal of my rectum & anus a few months later), I actually felt better. Both gaining in strength & health afterwards. I do recall my shortened small bowel 'resettling' after every surgery. And I do have many adhesions, but my surgery was performed many years ago. Prior to today's much more efficient modern methods & technique.

I am glad you found our Discussion Board & hopefully, the UOAA website also. It is chock full of info. Here is a link to just one of their sections: https://www.ostomy.org/news/ By reading the success stories of others it can help you prepare to meet any challenges.
Also, have you listed support resources for yourself during your surgical stay & for after you go home? You might find that just writing down the names of people (family, friends & professionals & organizations) who you know are there to help you, will encourage you thru this journey. You'll want to include your surgical nurse practitioner & ostomy nurse. The major ostomy supply manufacturers & their phone numbers can prove handy once you are post-op & customizing your choice of equipment to fit your specific needs. Many have knowledgeable reps available to talk to you. Their websites are very informative as well.
And keep checking in with us. I joined the then UOA back in the late seventies & have witnessed its progress over decades. Thanks to phenomenal leadership by those who fully understand what it means to have an ostomy, a close working relationship with the Medical/Nursing professions & an ability to adjust to meet the needs & changes of current times, generations have benefited.
May God bless you & know you are truly not alone.

Re: PROS/CONS of rectum removal
Hi WW, I still have my rectum but I wish I didn't .It was left in case I could ever be re-joined - I couldn't because of incontinence .Now it has all but stenosed but I still occasionally pass mucous from it but it gets harder as I age .My Aunt had a colostomy also and she had her rectum removed .She had no problems with mucous or the urge to sit on .Now it would be big surgery for me to have it removed ,also you can get diversion colitis in it which I have .
good luck with your decision
