How often to see Physican post Ileostomy

Post by Joani »

My mom has a ileostomy that is approximately 20 years old. She is now in assisted living in another state under the care of a appointed Guardian, and declared incompetent because of Dimentia.

I have just found out it appears my mom has not seen a physician for 4 years. No Imaging, no EKG, no bloodwork, no mammo...ect

Can you please tell me approximately how often you should see a doctor after ostomy.

One of my concern is she has gained a lot of weight, and I thought I remembered where this could affect the stoma, and how the bags fit on.

Thanks

I have an annual appointment with my surgeon, but that's more to go over blood counts and to make sure that my cancer hasn't returned. That said, everyone should at least be seen by a physician annually just for routine check ups. At that time, your physician should ask about how the ostomy is functioning and if there are any issues. Once placed, ostomies can and will last the rest of the individuals life barring injuries/accidents or obstructions. Yes, gaining weight could cause a bowel obstruction, but that is not a significant concern overall. As long as she is having regular bowel movements, than the ostomy is likely functioning as it should. Again though, she should at least be seen by her physician once a year for regular check ups. Hope that answered your questions.
