I've developed leaks at the bottom of my pouch

Post by DaveG »

I've had my stoma for 10yrs so am used to it. But recently I have started having leaks at the bottom of the pouch which is just above the belt line. I have no idea why. Its an ileostomy

Hello Dave: Thanks for your posts. Do you find it is leaking from the closure area or the actual pouch?

DaveG,

Could the pouches be defective? You may want to call the manufacturer and discuss it. If there's a defect, your supplier should replace them.

The only thing that comes to my mind is that strong acid could possibly cause leakage. Change in diet recently? Are you hydrating enough? Ileostomates do often have acidic output but if you never had leakage before, it seems odd.

Thanks. How can I reduce acidity? And what does hydration have to do with it? It could be that

If you’ve gained or lost weight you may need to look at the sizing of your pouch. Pancaking or gas may cause the pouch to pull away from the skin also.

I have a urostomy, not an ileostomy, so this may not apply to your situation, but I recently had leaks with a Hollister 2-piece setup. Is yours Hollister? Convex or flat?

Its not due to pancaking or gas. I use a 1 piece , convex by Salts Medilink
