Painful output and stoma is now twice the size!

Post by DaveG »

I've had my ileostomy for 10yrs. My stoma has always been the same size since it settled post surgery.

Yesterday and today I have had stomach pain and every time I've had output I've really felt it and it's been uncomfortable. The actual stoma is sore as well. And I've just changed my bag and it's sticking out a lot more and is noticeably bigger. My pre cut hole was too small which is ironic as last week I sent a new smaller hole template to my supplier as it was too big!

Has anyone had this?

Have you alerted your physician? Sudden changes should be reported. With an upcoming holiday weekend, you may find it helpful to let your care team know.

Wow. I've had mine 6-7 years.
That sounds kinda scary.
I do hope you see someone. I'm sure you will.
Keep us updated.
I now wonder how often this happens..... I'm sorry it is happening to you.
But answers for the community would be good.
Good luck. Hopefully it's a natural occurrence.
I don't know.

I've had my ileostomy since 56. Had no problems until my second revision that's when
I got a similar problem. If I don't chew food or eat too much riffage I get a blockage.
That enlarges my stoma and hurts when stoma discharges.
Like others have suggested get professional help.

The stoma actually went to more than 3 times the normal size!
My nurse thinks there was a blockage which caused grief for stoma and it became swollen. Its back to normal now. What is weird is the output changed consistently as well for about 2 days

I rarely have serious blockages - maybe a few hours....but if I had what you seemed to describe I would have gone to the Emergency Room. Glad it resolved for you!!

I used to get blockages quite a bit before my hernia surgery. I can remember lying in bed and pulling my legs up. Sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Other times I would try drinking warm grapefruit juice. When all else would fail I would go to the ER.
