Blockage

Post by Nh2024 »

I have a blockage. My stoma is still producing but I am eating very little, only soft or liquid, but still feel the pushing and pressure as if my stoma is trying to push something out. Miralax has not worked and my doctor has prescribed a bowel prep to clear it. Have others been prescribed this for a blockage? Does it work? How did you make sure you did not get dehydrated?

I have only ever had one blockage and it was solved by taking a hot shower. The hot water plus kneading my belly was enough to eventually get things moving.

I had blockage once and went to the ER and told them what I suspect.

The pain all of a sudden got very bad and they came in and knocked me out.

Later it must have cleared and my bag was full, after dumping it twice in a row I felt fine and asked to go home.

You might have too small of a hole cut in your appliance or paste covering the stoma hole.

I suggest removing it and doing the hot shower/stomach massage as suggested or put a cup on your stoma and head to the ER. It might suddenly get worse like it did mine.

Naturally you need to drink plenty of just pure water with electrolytes after it clears. You should be urinating a lite yellow, dark yellow usually indicates dehydration or you ate vitamins. Almost daily B complex is very important as with a illeostmy that portion of your intestines responsible for extracting B is removed.

You also might have ER give you a CAT scan, there might be something more seriously wrong with you.

Copy this list, you need to watch your diet or risk blockage etc.

You don't say how long the blockage has been going on, what type of ostomy you have or how long you have had it, what type of doc advised the bowel prep....if you are still experiencing serious discomfort and it was me, I would go the Emergency Room....

Mirilax takes 8-10 hours to work.
Trust me. I know.
If you know with experience you have a blockage starting put a heating pad on immediately. As warm as you can handle it.
If you have a total blockage go to the er immediately. It's not something to mess with . I've had several.

Hey all, thanks for your responses. And sorry if I didn’t give enough info! I took miralax 3 days in a row with no effect so I decided to take the bowel prep as my surgeon recommended since my ilieostomy blockage was only partial and I was successfully eating soft foods. It started working immediately and I only used it until I was running clear with small pieces that I thought indicated the blockage breaking up. I used about 1/3 of the jug. After that the pushing stopped. I drank diluted Gatorade in between prep portions and did not have any ill effects from the prep. I’m glad I only needed to use a small amount of it! Thanks again!
