Okay no leaks but...

Post by Shamrock4806 »

I've think I've almost got this illeostmy bag thing licked.

My trouble now only seems to be with physical stress caused irritation.

When I sit for long periods more so in hot weather I'll get this irritation where the adhesive is and especially where the paste is surrounding the stoma.

If I lie down, the problem disappears. It only reappears when I stress the area.

Now I've bent the stiff convex horizontally to mold better to the stoma area where I have a belly fold. That has helped quite a bit, stopped a lot of leaks but not quite enough.

So besides laying on my back all day, what can I do to alleviate this situation? It seems to occur after day 2-3 after a fresh appliance. More so when driving because I'm slouching etc.

Note I do use a one piece convex to push my near flush stoma out with a protective sheet + 1/2" thin coating of no sting paste applied first. The benefit here is the protective sheet is absorbent and catches small leaks protecting the skin. I then apply more of a small amount of leveling paste then the convex, extra adhesive and belt.

Any suggestions what could be my problem and how to solve it? Or at least increase the wear time?

I'm pretty sure it's the heat of the day causing the irritation especially when driving. Night driving after cooling off inside, not so much of an issue.

Anyone experiencing heat irritation issues like what I'm describing?

Seems to only occur where the paste is. Is it going hard or something? Drying out? 🤔

Thanks 😊

Okay, it's definitely some sort of shear caused irritation.

I feel through the bag/appliance and at the top of the stoma where the paste is, it's irritated to the point of burning. But usually worse when I'm sitting.

When I'm laying on my back, I do the same and feel very little pain, just some residual burning sensation.

Now one would think it's caused by stomach acid but like duh, gravity. So how is the acid leaking upwards?

So it must be some sort of stress on the appliance that's pulling on the paste and the skin it's attached to.

Okay it's definitely heat and/or food quantity related.

I think what's occurring is the skin under the paste is stretching, thus causing irritation with the dried paste.

I may experiment with a paste + adhesive caulk combination or something. I need a bit more flexibility and painters latex caulk does that. Problem is drying time, which can be a few days.

Perhaps a ring of the latex caulk, followed by the protective sheet with a small gap around the stoma which is filled with the water resistant paste to act as a barrier until the caulk dries.

Okay caulk is bad for the skin, silicon would be better but...

Anyway I think what it is is that the paste is just drying out and getting hard after day three. Faster if it's hotter.

So since I'm in my vehicle most of the time I've lowered the temp.

Been just replacing the bag every three days when it becomes irritating.

However I'd rather make it last about a week at a time, but seems I need something that doesn't dry out as fast as the paste.

Now I do put down a nice coating of skin protectant so i guess I could put caulk on top of that as it's not in direct contact with the skin. Caulk remains flexible longer and takes days to set up, years to dry out. 🤔

What about using a barrier ring? The Hollister ones require using an adhesive remover. The Coloplast ones are just as good, maybe less adhering.
