Ostomy Bag Collection
I just received my ostomy bag about two weeks ago. Yesterday, all my poop was circled around my stoma and would not move down the bag. What am I doing wrong?
Re: Ostomy Bag Collection
You could try a lubrication and deodorant. In a pinch, I have used a lubricant like KY jelly too. Serves more than one use
Depending on the pouch, you can also move it manually. I'm in the process of changing brands and I have found it to be cumbersome compared to the current I've been using the past few years.
If you have a Hollister pouch with a filter, pancaking can soil it rendering it useless for releasing the gas.

Drink more water.
It will dilute your output.
And we are supposed to drink alot.
Mine does the same. But it depends on what I eat.

We call that pancaking. It can cause issues and leaks. It's easy to prevent with the right device and diet.nordgren wrote: 2024-08-25 08:29:04 I just received my ostomy bag about two weeks ago. Diet plays a large part in maintaining a balance of liquidity.
You should watch your urine amount and color. You should go pee like before and the color should be (without vitamins) a light yellow. So drink more water (plain water) but not too much more that your constantly dumping the bag. If your dizzy your likely dehydrated.
Also you need to watch what you eat, and drink as some foods increase output and some dry it up. Applesauce and Cheerios dry up, alcohol makes it runny as heck for instance.
Also if a illeostmy or illeo not being used, you need to supplement with B multivitamins like Centrum Silver as that part is responsible for taking B's out of the food. You'll get nerve pains like a diabetic does if you don't.
I have a list here of what foods to eat and not to eat, nothing hard or tough and fiberous or you can clog and wind up in the hospital! Also some things cause runaway diarrhea which makes putting on a replacement bag hard if not impossible.
You really need to eat small meals and watch what causes what, what exits the bag so you know not to eat that again as your stomach isn't digesting it. Eat yogurt to put bacteria into your system.
Try to plan your bag changes after a long fast, maybe you will see only bile in the bag, it won't stop because your hungry so eat a small something that soaks up, like applesauce. Then it should be quiet long enough to shower and dry off well (blow dryer) and put a new bag on. It takes time to learn but you'll get the hang of it. Stay away from seafood and asparagus because they stink bad.
A bag change usually every 3-5 days. Try to prevent leaks before they happen as that will throw off your cycle and stoma won't be quiet to get a bag on. Sleep on your back and right side only. Eat more on the morning and less or not at all at night. Less you be up all night dumping. Train yourself to feel the bag if it's full while sleeping. Use Ozium and Poo pouri to control stink, rinse the bag using mouthwash bottle with soap and water after each dump helps too.
Start out with a low amount of meat and grain diet (no seeds though) and drink V-8 for your veggies. Avoid solid veggies and most fruit, including salads until you learn more. Drink small amounts of fruit juice. Meat should be very tender, not hard and tough or it could clog.
Either put a bidet on the toilet or a seat and wand in the shower as if your caught with a leak then stoma may be spewing and you need to wait and rinse until it's quiet to put a new bag on.
Good luck.
