My Kingdom For An Irrigation Kit

Post by lolapergola »

Ever had to leave home in a hurry and forget your irrigation kit ? My advice - don't .We had 2 family emergencies happen at the same time , hence we left the house without it .It soon became apparent we were not going anywhere when we reached our far away family members ,and they had worsened .
I got straight onto e bay UK , but there wasn't a kit on there for sale - only in the U.S. , so onto Amazon - no kit either .I only had the sleeve .Back onto ebay where I tracked down a belt , but no faceplate or waterbag .Oh woe is me .We wracked our brains , you have to have a prescription in the UK to get hold of a kit from your supplier , and the NHS is really tightening it's belt .I was loathe to approach my G/P'S .The supplier couldn't give me one without a script -I was stuck .
My tummy coped ok for a few days but then became sloooow .I began to feel like a pregnant grandmother and in the end I had to go and take Dulcolax to have a good clear out .
The moral of this story is - never leave home without your kit .Keep one in your car , at your relatives , at your friends, at your enemies , under your hat !!! but never leave home without your irrigation set .And in the UK , never go into the hospital without it , because they will not have one or even know what the hell you are talking about .Sad , but true .This happened to me and they brought me a catheter .May as well have brought me a petrol pump .
Here endeth the eleventh lesson

Similar problem, a few months ago. I found some disposable water bottles which had an opening a little bit larger than my stoma (500 and 750 ml were OK for me) and I filled them. I placed the opening around my stoma, pressed to my skin so no water could leek out. I carefully squeezed the bottle and I managed to get part of the water in. I needed to refill the bottle a few times, but I was amazed (and relieved!) how well it worked. Still hope I won't forget to pack my kit again.
