leaking around urosotomy bag

Post by John4+ »

I have had a urostomy bag (2 piece Hollister) for five weeks. While it is suggested changing twice/wk, I'm finding that it frequently leaks between changes around the wafer.. I wet clean the stoma area, dry clean and then use adhesive wipes before putting on wafer and putty sealant. I try to make sure no creases. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I have the same problem with one-piece appliances and will be interested in any replies.

No experience with urology but an illeostomy is the same bag and application but with a spout to drain instead.

My process is as follows:

Use spray adhesive remover between wafer and skin to avoid skin damage. Take a shower.

Wash the area with nothing but plain water. The use adhesive remover again to get off the often last invisible film. Wash with only water again.

Dry the area well, allowing the skin to dry out well about 30 minutes

Any remaining wounds that are damp need a thin coat of stoma powder and brushed off well. Then a light spray coat of skin protectant and allow 30 seconds to dry. Dry well so no damp areas remain. If a fungal infection then use athletes antifungal foot powder in lieu of stoma powder the same way. If any areas still damp then repeat this crusting method again.

Adhesive needs clean, dry, oily and dust free skin with a normal natural lubrication balance or on skin protectant the same way. (If the skin has been very dry that it itches under the wafer then rub in hair conditioner during the shower and wash off with moisturizer soap only once to restore the skin balance then only water wash after that.)

Apply another coat of spray skin protectant under the entire wafer area and allow 30 seconds to dry.

Appy no sting paste around the stoma to ensure it's sticking as it won't to damp skin..if output occurs and gets on the paste or skin then remove and start over.

A thick ring of paste around once, then another around that one and even a third ring to cover the width of the wafer.

Press and hold the wafer adhesive down and then apply extra large barrier strips all around.

Some may need to take a body contour test at Coloplast to find the exact wafer type for ones body contour.
I get knocked down, but I get up again
