Ah it's not so good to drink coffee again. 😊

Post by Shamrock4806 »

Some of you might have remembered a time back when I was having leaks that they were very painful because of the acid of coffee and stomach acid being ejected from my stoma.

Normally stoma out put is about 8 pH, coffee and stomach acid much lower like 2-3 pH. Since the stomach didn't want the caffeine it considers it a poison and rejects it right away. Right into the bag.

So my leak wounds felt like I needed to rip the dam wafer off like right frigging now!

But just that I've been enjoying a nice tight and near leak free experience I've tried out having a little coffee to see if it would cause a runaway diarrhea situation of my stoma and so far nothing. But I've been limiting it just to see what its effects are going to be.

I really enjoy my morning coffee and hopefully now that I've settled my system down and getting a good deal on that I can continue.

So today is day two of having just a half a cup of steaming hot goodness. 😊

Nearly everything I've been suffering with is on account of piss poor ostomy adhesive removers. Ever since switching to oil free eye makeup remover with a little plain soap and water wash afterwards my skin has been in an absolute best condition possible for bonding well to wafer and barrier adhesives. Absolutely squeaky clean results everytime.

It's like my world changed for the better overnight. 😊

Well it was fun but it wasn't agreeing with Mr. Stoma and Mrs. Bag.

Slight burning at the stoma hole and ate through the pectin based adhesive barrier a little to quickly for my tastes.

Slight leak wounds that burned and unfortunately had to change the bag after two days.

So no more coffee.

Yep ChatGPT confirms coffee increases stomach acid production and thus can make illeostomy output more acidic.

Perhaps opt for instant or, even better, cold-brewed.

According to what it says, it's something in the coffee itself, not how it's prepared or even decaffeinated, that produces more stomach acid.

So far I've been unable to discover exactly what that something is.

I'm guessing it's the quinic acid and the body is saying whow I've got too much acid here and starts discharging it down the pipe in such quantities that the intestines don't have a chance to raise it to 8 pH like normal output is.

I will try both those methods you suggest to see though.

You know, since I got out of the hospital with this bag I've ate everything; as if I'm whole and never had a bag, I've eaten what I want.
I returned once for a blockage 2 years ago but I've never looked back. I continue to eat what I want.
I went into the hospital at a mere 130lbs and after surgery and three weeks recovery, I lost mega weight and suffered atrophy.
I could barely walk.
It wasn't until the hospital moved an 80 sum year old man into my room and he mirrors about the room without use of a came out wheelchair and seeing this, I resolved to getting my ass out of bed and on my feet.
I ate food every opportunity I could. I felt starved and couldn't get enough.
I quickly gained 20 lbs
But food is so expensive and being on state aid, it was nice in hospital while the nurses felt bad for me and fed me whenever I asked.
Now I have to pay for my own food and I have to budget so my weight has dropped again. But I still eat whatever I want-
My output is crazy. I've had at least a dozen nights when I've woken up to a messy bed-
Not fun!!! Disgusting and makes me vomit, too so it's bad.
I've learned to not eat oatmeal at night. Lol
But the topic is coffee-
I couldn't go without my morning Joe if you paid me. I'm privy to discomfort and a slight burning sensation, occasionally when I drink multiple cups and... And the most nasty thing are the phantom farts! I get- a little goop and a nasty sensation that feels like a fart and a small poop-
The Drs never explained this to me. I had to look it up
Like I did the gauze looking poop. I thought for sure the Drs forgot some gauze in my colon or something.
Nope. Not that at all.
Disgusting!

Ostomypower

There are some "rules" regarding diet and food portion control with an illeostomy (perhaps a colostomy too) that if ignored can cause significant issues including what your describing.

1: Don't swallow anything hard or that you can't chew into a paste it can cause a clog or blockage that may require a hospital visit. In fact if it's a paste or liquid before it enters your mouth that's even better as we all miss chewing stuff thoroughly. Some foods will turn into near liquid when digested by stomach acid, these one can get by as long as it's chewed well. Some foods will not because their skins or fibrous texture will not digest. Like onions, leafy greens and spinach.

2: Food portion control. Small less than 6 oz in total nutritious meals more often spaced out over 24 hours is the best method. I usually have something to eat every four hours, even in the middle of the night. If one eats too much (like pasta) and falls asleep they could wake up to a mess.

3: Train oneself to sleep only on their back. This is easy to do by placing a pillow under each arm for a few nights and one becomes trained to do it all the time and actually like it. This of course reduces the chances of dislodging the wafer and causing blowouts and leaks. The weight of the bag will become automatic to get up and take a dump.

4: Certain foods and drinks can cause many issues with an illeostomy, namely runaway diarrhea (if this occurs then stop eating or drinking anything, even water, it will stop) which will cause dehydration issues so you need to be careful. Some foods will dry up stool and come out very thick and even force the wafer off the skin. Crackers, cakes, cookies, bananas and yams are famous for this. To remedy requires dumping and rinsing out the bag and massaging the pancaked area with water until it's loose and flowing again. Can be avoided once one learns about what causes what and keeps a record. Again a lot of issues come down to portion control, like if I drink more than two cups of low-fat milk I have issues. Or more than a few swallows of orange or apple juice at a time. Etc. No alcohol in any amounts. Oatmeal is fine for me provided I don't eat a lot of it at once.

I have guide here of my diet and what the experts say what can cause what with an illeostomy

Or you can see an ostomy dietician to tell you the same things, and watch your B12 vitamin levels especially if your feeling nerve pain (neuropathy).

I eat usually nothing more than TV dinners now, staying away from the deep fried stuff (diarrhea city) and veggies that will clog (juice, soup or sauce only). I'll have small bowl of rice type cereal with low fat milk (fat causes diarrhea) with a few swallows of orange juice in the mornings. In the middle of the night I'll nibble a bit on a uncooked pop tart and drink some water to get back to sleep.

Less food (and diarrhea causing drinks like alcohol) as it's getting closer to bedtime and bigger nutritious meals before 3 pm usually is my routine as to have little or no bag issues during the night.

If you have any more issues just ask. 😊
