I had ileostomy surgery in 2007 and then in 2010, my small intestine ruptured when I had a blockage.
I have had mucous discharge happening from my rectum since my initial surgery in 2007 and it has become very frequent, happening approximately 4-5 times per day. I have only had two rectal exams with a finger probe since 2007.
My Gastroenterologist when I told her approximately 5 months ago that I have been having discharge frequently, she wanted to do a Sigmoidoscopy to examine my rectum for Cancer or Colitis. I told her I was too afraid since the 2-3 inches of Colon that I have left has been sewn up into my sacrum and I was too afraid that it would get punctured during the procedure, so I didn't have the Sigmoidoscopy done.
Recently in the latest Phoenix Magazine, I read the percentage of Cancer prevalence for those with retained rectums is higher the longer a person has had their retained rectum, and so I got concerned since I have had my retained rectum since 2007 and I have never had a Sigmoidoscopy Exam.
Has anybody ever had a Sigmoidoscopy to check for rectal cancer that has had a retained rectum?
I am seeing my Gastroenterologist to discuss the procedure in a couple of days, though would like to have input here to see what anybody's experience was with the procedure.
