Okay I'm sick of meat causing huge fluid losses...

Post by Shamrock4806 »

...but I need my protein. Every meat I eat is causing lots of liquid output for hours on end and I'm sick of it.

So I'm cutting out meat for another protein source with no gluten and no fat.

So I asked ChatGPT and it had this list

Here are high-protein, gluten-free, lactose-free, very low-fat foods that avoid seafood and are typically well-tolerated with an ileostomy:

Egg whites – almost pure protein, no fat, easy to digest. Yes I like these.

Skinless chicken breast or turkey breast – baked, poached, or pressure-cooked to stay moist. Absolutely not causes me lots of liquid output.

Lean pork tenderloin – trimmed of all visible fat, cooked until soft. Absolutely not, liquid city

Extra-firm or silken tofu (plain) – choose unseasoned, non-GMO, no added flavors. Huh?

Tempeh (plain, well-cooked) – mild flavor; steam first to reduce fiber. Uh fiber tends to pancake me.

Protein isolates or powders – e.g., 100 % whey isolate (lactose-free) or pea protein isolate for shakes.

Collagen or gelatin powder – dissolves in hot or cold liquids, essentially pure protein.

Lactose-free, fat-free Greek yogurt or skyr (if you tolerate cultured dairy). I like Greek yogurt.

Low-fat cottage cheese made with lactose-free milk (check label for “lactose free”). I like this too.

Okay so has anyone had any experience with protein isolates like whey isolate? Or collagen gelatin powders?

This is all new to me. I could try some but often it's in a big container.

I wouldn't know what to do with the stuff.

Based on my own experience, two thoughts come to mind.

One, try having rice or potatoes with your protein. I found having carbs with my eggs or seafood minimizes the fluid issues.

Two, check whether you're having gall bladder issues. I'm wondering if it's dumping.

I do not understand why you are having so much diarrhea from eating meat. Since it happens with beef and not with chicken or pork, one of the possibilities is that your may be suffering from "alpha-gal allergy syndrome". Bites of ticks, especially the Lone-Star tick introduces tick saliva that contains a particular conformation of the sugar, galactose, with other chemicals and that people can become allergic to this after tick bites. It turns out that red meat contains a similar substance. So, if you happened to have been repeatedly bitten by these ticks and have developed this allergy, it may trigger a similar immune response in your gut and this could cause diarrhea. You may have to visit a doctor who specializes in allergies to find out it you have this. If so, there is no way out except for stopping red meat in your diet.

Regarding rice as a protein source, I use "Dairysky lactose-free" powder from Amazon.com for making smoothies. It contains rice and peas protein. It contains more sugar than it needs to and it doesn't completely dissolve, so it has a slight powdery feel in your mouth. But you drink this for nutrition and not for pleasure.

It happens with all meat, beef, chicken, turkey and pork.

Turned out I ate five slices of deli turkey and apparently it was brined. The excessive salt triggered the diarrhea episode.

It's like one can't get anything plain anymore.

I had a friend give me some whey protein powder last night and today I was like a rocket ship. Yes I had some watery output but it wasn't endless going on all afternoon like what most meat causes.

So although I'll have a little meat once in awhile I'll have a glass of lactose free milk with the whey protein powder at night before bedtime for energy.

It was nice to feel so energized again.

High protein, medium carbs and low salt & fat illeostomy diet for sure.
