Quick & Easy Oral Rehydrate Solution

Post by Shamrock4806 »

Chilled filled water bottle.

Drink 1/4 of it

Add a very tiny pinch(s) of salt until it's barely tasteable after being shaken

Fill bottle back up with Orange Juice

Shake

Sip slowly

Done

The orange juice provides the sugar, the flavor and the potassium. Just need a little salt, but not to much of it's counter productive as the body will need to flush it out. Works for any sized bottle.

Too much plain water tends to flush out electrolytes and runs through the digestive system and into the bag.

Been using this along with plain water bottles, lactose free low fat milk and regular orange juice to replace my fluids lost through ileostomy dumpings.

If I keep the fat, salt, spices, alcohol, artificial ingredients and many other food or drink hazards away that helps considerably as well.

Definitely works, I crave less water this way.

I've also taken to blending whey protein powder into a quart of milk and back into the carton. I drink a few mouthfuls whenever throughout the day.

Definitely a game changer, I'm now on a high protein, low carbs and really low fat diet. Combined with eating just very small meals that digest well. So now instead of suffering with bag issues I'm feeling almost normal again, not weak, dizzy and confused. 😊

Note: Contrary to what a certain troll here has said, this Oral Rehydrate Solution is NOT a cure for ileostomy diarrhea.

Many things can cause a diarrhea issue with an ileostomy, too much fat, salt, caffine, magnesium, alcohol, fruit juices, spices, lettuce, chocolate, artificial ingredients and so on and so on.

All this ORS does is helps ensure nothing life threatening happens with a loss of electrolytes from drinking too much plain water to replace the loss in diarrhea.

Really just a tiny pinch of salt in the water will do, just enough that one can barely taste it is good enough. Too much salt and the same bad effects occur, more water consumption and more diarrhea as the body attempts to flush it out the excess.

Best thing to control an illeostomy diarrhea is not to eat or drink the things that can cause it. But sometimes one has an infection or ate something that spoiled etc.

If all possible try not to consume anything but just tiny sips of the OCR if one has diarrhea, because the body is in flush mode and it's going to keep doing it as long as it thinks your putting more poison back in, or in the case of an infection or bacteria, trying to starve it of food.

So you just want to keep from life threatening dehydration until the diarrhea settles down.

This has been my experience with it anyways, went in the ER with a runaway diarrhea so bad it was squirting all over the walls, the body would not stop long enough for me to put on a bag.

Turned out I was so weak after surgery I was just consuming an engineered food in a form of a shake, apparently something in it caused a severe diarrhea situation but I was so weak I consumed more and set a multi day diarrhea situation into gear. After two days of being unable to put the bag on I stumbled outside naked and fell, called an ambulance. The hospital they took me too said they couldn't help me, had the police escort me out, what dicks.

I then drove to the best hospital in the area 2.5 hours away filling a glass with spew and pouring it out the window the whole way, then collapsed in their ER.

They knew exactly what I had, said it was an infection compounded by the shake ingredients and I was up all night sucking the spew up as it flew off my stomach into the air.

They didn't give me a single drink of water or food, my mouth was severely parched, then it finally stopped and they took me upstairs for a hot shower (very nice hospital) and cured my infection and put a bag on me a really good kind. I've been using Coloplast ever since, 10 days later they kicked me out right as rain.

Because of their excellent treatment I went back for all my cancer evaluations and saw an otosmy nurse and dietitian which gave me some excellent information about what not to eat with an ileostomy or cause problems. So they wound up making $80,000 off my insurance just because they took the time to care when the other hospital didn't.

Ah, since reading it's a slight amount of salt required to keep one from having life threatening issues, I just picked up a box of small salted cheese crackers and keep them nearby to munch on a few when I feel the urge. A few sips of water to wash it down and I'm good. 😆

The crackers also absorb liquid and thickens output a little as well.

Stuff gets easier once you understand the basics.
