New Koch Poucher here with questions

Post by Manofplay »

Hey there,

Glad I found this site. I am a little over two months out from having a KPouch. I am doing well with two exceptions.

I am still having a good deal of drainage from the barbie/ken butt area. Havent quite figured that one out yet.

The more pressing concern is the ostomy opening. It seems that I have more drainage than most. I have tried the Mestopore self adhesive absorbency pads and find that they only hold for two or maybe three hours before they are saturated and begin to leak. I am looking for something similar but that is more absorbent. Anyone have any ideas? Currently I use a couple of cotton balls over the site and place a nursing pad over it. It works ok, but I would rather have something that I was confident would stay in place and wouldnt risk slipping when my boxers moved.

Thanks for your help,

Hi Mike,

My stoma produced a bit of discharge at first as well. Now, nine months later, things have slowed quite a bit. I use the hypoallergenic AMPatch from the Continent Ostomy Store. They work well enough, lasting me sometimes longer than 8 hours.

If the nursing pads are providing the protection that works for you , try using some paper tape to secure it on your body.

AmPatch covers are good, they are expensive especially if you empty 4-6 times a day and your insurance doesn't cover supplies (like me)

Mestopore are fairly useless for a long period for high output stomas.

Stomaseal also are fairly useless (my opinion)

Maybe when the mucous discharge lessens (supposedly it does after time) these other products will be an option.

After doing some research, I have called and asked for some samples of the most absorbent patch from the company that does that AMPatch. They said they will ship them out to me tomorrow. Hopefully those work.

The nursing pads work alright as long as I put cotton balls under them to absorb the moisture first. I have found that when I use the paper tape repeated times it really disturbs my skin. For awhile I limited using the tape til my just before bedtime routine. Unfortunately I still found that my skin would get red an irritated after repeated nights usage.

Mike,

I have been using the AMPATCH for years. They have different sizes/absorbancies and also have some cotton-like inserts you can use for extra absorbancy. Sometimes I just use a cotton ball for extra absorbancy. You didn't mention whether or not your insurance company will pay for these. Some folks also cut up disposable diapers into small squares and tape them over the stoma with a strip of paper tape. (much cheaper) Most of us have just experimented until we've found what works best for each of us. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck,
Lynne

When I had my first Kock in 1979 I did use disposable diapers that I cut. I secured them with paper tape until I realized my undies will keep them in place.
But the nursing pads are even better and less prep!

Mike, have you been changing the placement of the tape?

I did try moving the placement of the tape, but there is only so much of an area that you can move it to that it will still hold.

Would a cut up diaper work better than the nursing pads I am using currently?

I am waiting on some AMPatch samples, but very well could be coming back with more questions on this.

Thanks again for all of your help,

Mike

Oops, forgot about the insurance. I think the insurance will pay for a portion of it. I need to look into that some more.
