problems irrigating indiana pouches

Post by benibrooks »

I am having trouble irrigating my Indiana pouch. The catheter falls out of the stoma site because I use my hands to hold the syringe full of saline solution. Any other people have any problems. Please let me know.

irrigating Indiana pouches

Post by LGilpin »

I have had this same problem at times. Many times I have given the bathroom a "shower" because the cath slipped out of the stoma while I was pushing the saline in. I usually hold the cath in the stoma with one hand while pushing the syringe with the other. The hardest part is refilling the syringe with saline with one hand. It would be great if we had a extra hand to manipulate everything.

I irrigate my "urostomy" stoma using a 16" inch catheter which I have completely inserted - only the widened end is visible -- would that work for you (I still am so ill-informed about any other type of stoma or about ostomies with bags.)

Try pushing the catheter in farther and go slowly as you push the saline in. Also hold the catheter with one hand and the syrine with the other. Practice doing the one hand method with just plain water over the sink till you feel comfortable doing it. It just takes practice! Also for the person who needs to refill the syringe do you have an extra one? Fill it before you start so you have two ready to go.

I had my Indiana pouch done in May of 06 and when still irrigating ran into the same problem. I fully agree with the taking it slow suggestion. I found the slower and more patient Iwas the less likely my catheter "popped" out. Filling the syringe with one hand is difficult but it does get easier wth practice. Try pushing the cath in as far as you can before you start to irrigate, you may have to pull it out a bit when you are pulling back to avoid a "bladder hickey" which hurts so bad I saw stars the first time. Good luck and be patient. I speak like a pro and it has not even been a year but it gets easier a lot quicker than you would expect. Hang in there!

The plunger on the syringe I use has a loop on the top for the thumb. With that and the "handle/grip" on the syringe cylinder, I am able to fill and empty the syringe with one hand using my index and middle finger to grip the cylinder and my thumb to raise and lower the plunger. I'm learning - I've only had my pouch since March 06. Also, curious of how everyone cleans their syringes. I soak it in hot water with a little clorox.

Hope everyone has a great 2007!!
