Overweight with a urostomy causing problems!!!

Post by Charlene69 »

Hi there, I'm new to this site but have a huge problem I've been dealing with for a long while now. Where the surgeon placed my stoma, I know have a fold because of my "spare tire" and it causes the flange to cut into my skin, it is painful, and causes alot of odor. I have been to the doctor about it and they just give me a topical antiabotic and tell me to use NON-convetec appliances, but then I have constant leakage. I have way to busy of a life to deal with that, so I just deal with the pain. But its very scary because I have an open wound that has been there for a couple of years in the top part of the appliance. YES-I've tried to lose the weight and I get to a plateu and no luck after that, I've even opted surgery but my insurance won't pay for it. Any idea's?? Thanx in advance!

Charlene, what types have you tried? I wonder if you have tried Nu-Hope as they have a foam backing which is easy on your skin. I would also try using an appliance with convexity built in as this may help. I started off with an ileal conduit and then switched over to and internal pouch. I had loads of skin problems with my urostomy and then when I switched most of the problems are now gone since I no longer need to wear an appliance. Another brand that is easy on your skin is Cymed, but again make sire you get it convexity. Let me know what happens! Judith

Charles... thank you for the links... I looked at them and going to see if my insurance will work thru them... I think its worth a try.. :)

Squid... you know I went to a urologist about trying to get an internal and he said that my insurance will only pay if it is a medical necessity and he said I didn't have one... I only have one kidney and of course the ileal conduit allows "dirty" urine to go back up to your kidneys... not to mention the deep wound I have everyday of my life... he still wouldn't ok it. He said that it would put me in ICU and could take my life and its just not worth it. He said he would do it if I insisted but then I'd have to pay for it myself and who can afford that! He called it COSMETIC surgery! :(

If it was me I would get a second opinion, you might also want o see an ET nurse for help in in ideas about a different pouching system. Maybe the ET will say that an internal pouch is a medical necessity. I hswitched because there were all sorts of problems with my ileal conduit and I even had it revised once, but still had problems. Where are you located?

Charlene,

I agree with Squid - you should get a second opinion. It seems as if you are having enough pouching problems to make it a necessary option.
