I would like to know what some of the phrases in our profile mean...like what is "GMT", "Avatar", "Sub-silver", etc. ??

I can answer two of those. GMT is Greenwich Mean Time - the time in the UK in the winter as the 0 degree line of longitude passes through Greenwich near London and all world times are calculated as + or - from this line.

The avatar is the little picture which some of us have put on the site. You can see mine on the left of this post.

Hi Barbie,

First, I must inform you that I am moving this thread into the "Help Using the Discussion Board" forum because that's where it belongs; i.e., this isn't an ostomy question. Now, to address your questions:

GMT refers to "Greenwich Mean Time" which is an old name for what's now properly called Universal Time (UT), see http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/UT.html which is basically standard time on the 0° line of longitude which passes through Greenwich, England. Times in any time zone are specified relative to GMT. This discussion board tries to display times in your own local time (when you're logged in), but in order to do that, you must specify your time zone in your profile. For example, U.S. Eastern Standard Time is GMT - 5 hours (i.e., 5 hours earlier than GMT), while Pacific Standard Time is GMT - 8 hours. During the summer, due to daylight savings time, local time on the U.S. East Coast is actually GMT - 4 hours and on the West Coast GMT - 7 hours. Assuming you live in an area that observes daylight savings time, you'd have to change the time zone setting in your profile twice a year in order to always display correct local times (our board software can't do that automatically because it doesn't know whether you live someplace that observes daylight savings time). An Avatar is the little picture that you see displayed beneath some people's names in their postings. If you have a suitable image file, you can upload it using your Profile settings. subSilver is the default "style" or "skin" provided with this discussion board software. This determines the general appearance of everything on the board: color scheme, text sizes & styles, etc. Some discussion boards provide many alternative styles. I haven't done that because I've found that doing so can interfere with installing security upgrades when the software is updated. I do, however, provide two minor variations on the subSilver theme, namely, "biggerText" which is the same as subSilver but with bigger text, and "bignBold" which makes the text bigger and also puts it in boldface.
