Urostomate for 36 yrs seeks top surgeon for Continent Diver

Post by Carol in Orlando »

Does anyone know of top surgeons in this country that specialize at converting pre-existing, long-term ostomies (35yrs+) into Indiana Pouches of other types of Continent Diversions?

I'm a "young", active 43 yr old that was born with a non-functional bladder.

Urologists I have spoken with have said that it would be a "dangerous" undertaking because my kidneys are so used to having a conduit these past 36 years.

Last year, I had lithotrypsy done due to chronic kidney infections which were caused by recurring bacteria that creeps up the conduit to the kidneys due to peristomal infections caused by "old" urine stuck in the wafer around the stoma & reflux. Any advice or sugeons to call to explore converting my urostomy into a continent diversion?

Thanks, for your help in advance to everyone who replies!

Carol,
Three years ago I was a patient at Cleveland Clinic in Florida and one of my nurses had just had this surgery done at the hospital. I don't know which urologist was her doctor.
The website is www.ccf.org if you want to look around or call the department to ask.

Carol,
There are a few folks here with Indiana pouches. Hopefully one of them will respond soon to your post.

I had my ileal conduit converted to a version of the Indiana pouch 16 years ago. My ileal conduit was 6 years old. I had mine done at Lahey Clinic in Burlington Ma. They made the in it in the top 25 hospitals for urology. I would check them out.

Carol, try Dr. Alan Klaiman, Winter Park 407-897-3499...

Also give a call to MD Anderson Center in Orlando and ask for referrals from them to Dr's that handle your problem and work out of Orlando Regional.....
