I seem to keep getting "pouch-itis" in my Indiana Pouch. I'll go a round of anitbiotics and within about 7 - 10 days after finishing it I'll start leaking a lot and unable to fully empty my pouch. When cathing it will seem like the pouch is squeezing the catheter. My doctor is a bit preplexed. Has anyone else had problems similar to this? Is it possible I will "grow out of this"? It has only been 6 months since I had my pouch sugery. On a good day, while on anti-biotics, I go 3 - 3.5 hours between emptying pouch. When the pouch is acting up - sometimes I leak in less than an hour!!! And when I say leak, I mean, it's time to change clothes kind of leak!!
Are you irrigating your pouch? I wonder if you have a build up of mucus in there that is harboring bacteria. Are you drinking enough? One thing my uro told me to do was to take 500 mgs of Vit. C daily, he said he personally does 1,000. Your pouch is still considered to be new and in the 1st year it is still maturing, so it is not uncommon to have some difficulties. Besides drinking water also drink cranberry juice or take cranberry pills to help keep your urine acidic. If you can't take cranberries ( I take Coumadin and cranberries are a nono) pomegranate juice also works as does blueberry juice or just blueberries. Judith
This is probably too little too late, but how are you cleaning your caths?
I used to boil mine, but switched to hard plastic (I was having trouble with the red rubber jobs).
Now, I wash mine as I'm washing my hands before each cath. I use Dial Soap (either the orange stuff in the pump bottle, or to foaming type). I just coil my cath up in my hands, wash them really well, with very little water, rinse out the cath with my hands, and insert. I don't use any lube, since that can become contaminated if you're not really careful. Then, put a little ointment over the stoma, a bandaid over that, and I'm ready to go.
I have an advantage, I know, since I'm retired, and mostly drain myself at home, so my sorroundings are a little more constant than most peoples.
Good luck.
But, it might be something as common as this.
I have had this on and off for years. I notice that it mostly happens when I am stressed, or if my body is under stress, like preseason training or something. I just keep on drinking water and spend more time draining. I reckon you will grow out of it... but don't expect it never to come back. As long as you are getting something out.
