Lee: Good to read your post. Flush stomas can be difficult for many to deal with. Patients & medical professionals alike. The original stoma I had done in 1977 was under extreme emergency conditions in the night. It was also flush & back in those days, resources for dealing with it were less than adequate. (I did, though, & also worked despite dire predictions from my then GI physician until 1985 when it was revised by an excellent surgeon at a major Upstate NY medical center. I must give my GI man credit for the referral.) With modern advances in ostomy care & management, patients have improving alternatives. Our UOAA has played a major role in seeing these changes implemented on many fronts.
Unfortunately, we continue to find those individuals in the field who for whatever reason, ignorance, fear, or plain meanness of character, blurt out cruel remarks. That is why our continuing support of UOAA & its message is so very vital.
