Re: Rectal Stump Discharge

Post by 22Sunpuperwolf22 »

I had ileostomy surgery in 2007, and have had mucous discharge from my retained rectum ever since then. Yesterday I had my first ever Sigmoidoscopy since my surgery due to my frequent rectal discharge and I had to prepare for the exam with a tap water enema that I have never done before. Since I haven't utilized my rectum since 2007, it was really painful and uncomfortable to do that preparation for the Sigmoidoscopy procedure. Tonight after yesterday's procedure, I am so unbelievably sore and bleeding slightly every time I have to expel mucous from my rectum. The pressure I have felt in my rectum is unbelievably uncomfortable and I have to continuously secrete mucous. I bleed slightly, though the bleeding is less every time. My surgeon told me I can expect some bleeding after the procedure which will eventually stop as the capillaries inside the rectum and 3 inches of colon start to recover from the procedure. My surgeon has prescribed an enema medication where I have to reenter my colon and inject the medicine infused liquid into my rectum yet again to heal the colitis she determined I had. I am waiting a few days for the pain and pressure to cease before I start the medicated enemas twice per week. Has anybody had a Sigmoidoscopy to check for retained rectal cancer and mucous draining as I had yesterday to determine what is causing their retained rectal mucous discharge?

Hi,
I had my ileostomy surgery in 2008. There have been times with more discharge and also pain / inflammation but eventually it calmed down on its own again. But I'm also a bit concerned about the cancer risk. I had one examination of the rectum here (I think five years ago), they didn't ask me to prepare at all. There was quite a bit of inflammation in the rectum but no cell changes that would require any action.

I do self administer butyrate once a week but I can barely hold 10ml, takes some minutes for the rectum to calm down and retain it for a few hours. Not been prescribed that but from what I understand butyrate does have benefits in any case.

I wonder if there's people that have their rectal stump for even longer? :-)
