I am not that computer literate, but if I understand correctly, sooner or later, like it or not, this change has to happen. If so, then Bob, your the one to do the job. Good luck, and thanks, Robert

BOARD SOFTWARE REVERTED TEMPORARILY TO OLDER VERSION

Post by ewn »

Hello,

Chiming in on all this -- I didn't experiment much with the new board, so I can't comment too much, but I do have to say I really really dislike tiny fonts. This board has fonts about as small as I can take. If the fonts are too small, I'm not going to be able to read the messages and I'll end up having to scratch this board off my list of useful resources. That's not a threat, but a plea -- I really want to stay connected here, it's been more helpful than anything else I've come across. Please, whatever you switch to, go with something with a reasonable, readable font size -- or something people can adjust the size of in their profiles, if necessary. Thanks so much!

Bob -- Hang in there! Yes, us older folks don't like change -- but eventually we get used to it. You must be very frustrated after all the time and hard work you put into the new board. I remember programing on the old FORTRAN. Just remember --- we all love the board and will be glad just to be able to use it, read the posts, keep in touch, etc. No matter which version we end up with!!! We really just need one we can log unto every day [or night]. Maryel

Since a couple of you have commented on the font size: You probably didn't notice that on the new board (which is currently disabled because of all the crashes we had with it), there was a little "A" button near the upper right of every window that looked like:
Image
And when you clicked that "A" button, the text size would cycle through three levels: its default size, a bigger size, and a still bigger size. (And, incidentally, I tweaked our copy of phpBB3 so the jumps in text size when clicking that "A" button were bigger than they would be in a default phpBB3 installation.)

Meanwhile, as we're back in our old phpBB2 board for the time being, I explained in my "Help Using Discussion Board" posting at http://www.uoaa.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=257 that I produced clones of phpBB2's default "subSilver" style called "biggerText" and "bignBold" for users who want bigger text. I didn't feel any need to do this in phpBB3 because of the "A" button built into phpBB3.

Bob, I feel for you when you're reading that so many didn't like the new board. It's sort of like dating someone for a long time and after you break up, you found out everyone hated him. heh I appreciate the hard work you put in keeping us in the loop. Hope we don't sound like ungrateful snots. :D

I fear Bob's gone missing!! I personally would've checked out a long time ago, given the stress of converting to a new-and-improved board. But Bob gave it the ole college try......several times....before heading for parts unknown.

We miss you Bob. This was not a failure on your part, as you surely know. That probably doesn't help right now, but one day it will.

Come back soon. And when you do, could you do something about adding animated videos to our posts, with volume control? And perhaps.....fragrances? Some people will need to opt out though, for allergen reasons. There could feasibly, also, be a button that, once pushed, eliminates the need for typing; allowing "spirit writing" to take over. Imagine the possibilities for those of, uh......you.....who have several voices going on at ONCE!

I await your ever-so-calm reply.......
ain't life grand??
