Longterm Koch Pouch Complications

Hi everyone,

I am a new member and am very thankful for this website and the group.

I had my koch pouch done about 20 years ago at U.C. San Francisco due to Ulcerative Collitis and have not had a surgeon look at it since.

About a year ago I started to notice that when I am sitting in a chair and lean forward, my bowel seems to get blocked. My stomach gets bloated and feels hard. It is as if there is some blockage somewhere that is preventing my stool from getting to the pouch and as a result it is backing-up.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and whether it was related to their koch pouch or scar tissue that may have formed over the years? Also, I was wondering if the group could share what kinds of problems they have encountered over the years as a result of the kock pouch? So little is known about the longterm complications.

I am having a doctor exam me next week. Is there a test that doctor's can perform in order to evaluate the condition of the pouch and stoma, and make sure that everything is in order? Finally, can anyone recommend a good doctor who works in Northern California (preferably the East Bay).

Welcome to our Discussion Board. It does sound like some kind of blockage, but your doctor will certainly be a better evaluator of the problem. I know of Dr. Dana Launer in the San Diego area, but no one in Northern CA. Perhaps someone else here will have a recommendation for you.
