Mitrofanoff 3 weeks ago

Post by sal50 »

Hi to all,
I am worried, I had a mitrofanoff placed and for the last 3 weeks a red robinson was placed in the stoma. During this time the catheter was knoted, but cont to leak pink thick drainage. I was lucky and my appendix was barely long enough, but did work. no bowel needed, ( I felt lucky). I had a SPC for 2 weeks, and a foley for 5 days.

Today, I went to my Uro he pulled the red robinson, and the foley. Was handed a 16 french red robinson and told to ISC every 4 hours.
I am having urge incont ( Which I had prior). and when I cath useing my mitrofan all I get is yellow- blood tinge drg NO URINE.
I am emptying by incont, some spont voiding, ISC.

I am getting no urine out of the mitroff. Is this normal? Very upset Uro did not do any teaching, Is the mitrof not working?
At one point I voided 200cc post void residual was 200cc. Before I voided I tried useing the mitrofanoff no urine, that 400cc
was in my bladder!!!!!

I also developed post op skin cellulitis which they had to open and drain my incision. This was a set back.

If anybody knows if this is normal for a mitrofanoff, let me know. T he catheter goes in easy no pain. All I get is this drg
and I did advance it all the way.

Please help if you can. Feeling Isolated, do not know were to turn. The Uro made it sound like this was easy.

Are you putting the catheter in far enough? If its not far enough into the bladder, no urine will come back out the catheter. I use male length catheters and have to put them in most of the length in order to get urine to flow. Another thing might be is that you are using a catheter that is too big. I had to switch from 14Fr catheters to 12Fr ones after my mitrofanoff because the 14Fr ones wouldn't go down all the way and empty my bladder. I am currently using 12 Fr LoFric Primo hydrophillic catheters. These catheters have a coating on them that is activated by soaking them in water for 30 seconds (you don't have to put KY jelly on them). This coating makes the catheter very slick so it will go into a mitrofanoff stoma easier. These are the best catheters for a mitrofanoff, in my opinion.
If you go to www.lofric.us, and use the contact button on the site, you can request pamphlets on the LoFric catheters and mitrofanoff information. They will also send you samples of the catheters and stuff. They also have a "BladderNews" magazine that they publish twice a year that has TONS of useful information in it. Hope this helps! :D
