cranberry juice
Surgery went well on Nov 24. Dr removed half bladder, relocated both ureters with stents to one kidney. Sent me home with cath & bag til Dec 19. If all is well stents and cath will be removed. Will have to self cath after that. The color of urine was fairly red(understand that after surg) but still after being home for 2 weeks the color is normal most of the time and then suddenly at night mostly it will be red again, then back to yellow. Since I have been home I've been drinking 2 glasses of cranberry juice. Does this effect the color of the urine and why is it not continually red then?

Re: cranberry juice
I don't think that cranberry juice will color your urine red. My theory is that you might still have blood in your urine, but during the day you are drinking enough to dilute it so it looks normal. At night you dehydrate some so the blood is more visible. I think it wouldn't hurt to let your surgeon know. Welcome home and glad the surgery went well. Judith
Re: cranberry juice
What Squid said. Also, when you're awake you are upright and moving around whereas at night you're lying prone. Guess this is allowing blood to pool in your kidneys instead of flowing freely, and some is leaking out. Nothing to really worry about, it'll fade as time goes on. Just keep your doc appraised of it.

Thanks

Re: cranberry juice
Sometimes it takes some spots longer to heal completely, so that might be why sometimes your urine is bloody. It can also happen if your urine is too concentrated and irritating the spots that had surgery on them. This is what happened to me after my mitrofanoff operation in 2006. Cranberry juice won't turn your urine red (at least, I've never seen it turn red in me). You might also look into taking cranberry tablets if the juice gets too expensive to buy all the time. Azo makes cranberry tablets and they are also sold at almost every pharmacy in the vitamin isle. You take 2-4 of them daily. I have been taking cranberry tablets for years and it helps quite a bit to reduce UTI's and even urine odor.

Re: cranberry juice
I don't think cranberry juice would stain your pee...beets might and do....
Do you drink lots of water to help keep your pee pale coloured....
I take cranberry pill and a VitC ever day to keep pee acidic...so help fight off any bugs as I have a uro as well as an ostomy...I would check with your doc if it persists just to put your mind at rest...been a lot going on inside you and it may just take a while to settle down...
