Trouble Posting

Post by DAVIDV »

Hello, new guy here. Was logged in and tryed to post a note twice yesterday was sent to the log in spot. Any ideas. Havn't had to many conversations about stomas/ostomy with friends. Reading other folks postings is sort of refreshing. "I can take a crap WHILE I'm fishing and YOU can't", was about as far as it went. I do need some help with pouches. Thanks. David

Hi David,

About your difficulty posting, the problem was that you took more than an hour to compose your message. Our software automatically logs you out after an hour of "inactivity" so, by the time you clicked the "Submit" button, you were no longer logged in (and, unfortunately, when this happens, you lose the contents of the message you were composing). The software on our server detects your "activity" only when you do things that actually send signals to this software. When you simply type into the message composition window, you aren't sending any signals to our software, which therefore thinks you're "inactive" (even though you may be busy typing away).

If you're composing a long message that may take more than an hour to write, there are several strategies for working around this problem:
  • Write your message in a word processor or text editor separate from your web browser; then, when you're ready to post, login to the board, access a message composition window, and paste your already composed message into that window.
  • Compose your message normally within the board, but at regular intervals (maybe every 15 or 20 minutes) click the "Preview" button. The can be helpful in showing how your message will look, but more importantly, it signals our software that you're still there, so it won't regard you as "inactive" during the whole time you're composing the message.
  • When logging in to the board, create an "auto-login" session by checking the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox next to the login prompts. See a Help message at http://www.uoaa.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4122 that I posted about this feature. In this way, even if you take more than an hour to compose your message, you'll get logged in immediately when clicking the Submit button, and you won't lose the content of your message. If you use the board's auto-login feature, be sure you've written down your username & password somewhere, so you'll have them when needed.
  • If you're in the middle of composing, but you're going to be away from your computer for a while, save your message as a "draft." To do this, click the "Save" button beneath the composition window. When you're ready to resume work on the message, go to "User Control Panel" near upper left of the screen, then click "Manage drafts" on the left side. Click "Load draft" to load it into a regular composition window to continue working on the message and post it when ready. There's also a "View/Edit" option that lets you edit the draft (and save changes) without loading into a window that you can post from.
Edited 2009-12-02 to add 4th option about saving as draft.
