Indiana Pouch pains

Just wondering if any one else gets sharp pains in their pouch. I know I have IBS in my pouch so I am thinking it may be due to that, but sometimes I get very sharp pouch pains and sometimes it feels its being pinched inside by something. I will notice some slight bleeding after this happens, any thoughts? Thanks, Judith

Judith:

First I am a little confused about having IBS in your pouch. Is it not a urine pouch, I thought IBS was irritable bowel syndrome?

I have an Indiana puch and sometimes I feel some discomfort, not necessarily sharp pains. I get sore sometimes around the stoma.
If it is a unrinary pouch and there is blood it could very well be an infection - if so you need to see your Dr.

Sorry I can not be too much help.

Yes it is a urinary pouch, but apparently the piece of bowel they used had IBS in it. I was diagnosed with IBS in my pouch a few years ago when they did a scoping of the pouch while I was under anesthesia. Thank you for replying!

Thanks for that info Judith. I had no idea IBS could show up in your pouch as it is made of bowel. That may seem obvious but I never even thought about it. I have IBS as well. So far it has not effected my pouch, but I can see how it could, as in your case. See you can learn something new every day. What do the doc's say can happen in this scenario - having IBS in your pouch?

Basically I treat it with dicyclomine when the spasms get too bad. I think that even if I was to have another pouch made that too might get IBS in it. I originally had an ileal conduit and there were problems with it. Urine did not get pushed out through the stoma, rather it sat inside the conduit. The report I got after a test showed that there was "ineffectual churning motions" in my conduit. I am thinking that it had IBS in it was well. The reason I had my bladder out was due to interstitial cystitis, so who knows if that is also affecting my remaining bowel- they know so little about the disease.

I have had a urinary Kock pouch since 1986. I do get pains near my stoma and sometimes in my pouch. No one can explain the adjacent stoma pain. My best guess is that the pain is related to either abdominal adhesions or a possible stone hanging onto the metal sutures that are in my bladder. The occassional pouch pain I believe may be a form of pouchitis [inflammation of the pouch often caused by an infection]. These are only theories as the urosurgeons at the the University Hospital of New Mexico don't have any experience with a Kock Urinary pouch. I am sorry that you also have pain, but now you know that you are not alone.

Peggy, thanks for replying. I had my bladder removed the same year as you! I originally had an ileal conduit though, then in 1992 had it switched over to my continent pouch. Judith
