Hi!

I had my colon removed and need to have the j pouch created in the next few months. I'm wondering how to go about researching Colon and Rectal Surgeons and seeing what their history is in j pouches. Can anyone point me to a website for this or let me know the best way to go about researching this? I'm looking for either Tampa or Orlando but am willing to go anywhere.

I am so happy that you actually took my advice and already have a good lead. One other thought came to my mind when I looked to see if you posted here. It is that you want a surgeon who has done 100's or 1000's of j-pouches to operate on you. You DO NOt want a surgeon who has done 3 or 4. Be sure to ask them how many they have done. This is crucial to insure a successful outcome.

just another thought...I feel it's important to find a colorectal surgeon that performs jpouches. Some general surgeons do and while they may be okay at it, if the surgeon goes in and finds anything tricky, a colorectal surgeon is who you'd want.

Also, getting a consult is not a committment. It's ok to "shop around". If you do find one you like, it's okay to ask he/she for a patient referral. This way, you can get a feel for his style, bedside manner, etc and see if it's a match for you.

I would not limit my search to jpouch surgeons, there are alternatives, ie. kpouch and bcir. Investigate these options before deciding on the surgical route.
