SP catheter vs Urostomy

Post by PA3Moe »

Has anyone recently had a Urostomy and can tell me the benefits vs a SP catheter? I have the latter but now they want to do the Urostomy and I am scared to death it will be worse than what I have now.

Hi Moe
I had Urostomy 8-05 My bladder had to be removed due to cancer. Well while they were cutting they decided to take out prostrate also being as it was so close to bladder and yes guess what prostrate had no cancer. Dayam !!!! But back to you the bag works great and doesnt really bother me at all,Think of the good things,No more getting up in the middle of the night to go pee. The only time it bothers me is bouncing around on a tractor then adhesive wants to come loose but not that often. Feel free to e-mail me or post here if I can give you any answers that might help

No I have no pulling around stoma at all. The only thing I feel is if the bag gets to full due to my laziness,it gets heavy reminding me it's time to drain

Hi Hector
It didnt take long to get used to bag..have to wear a little looser pants. The bag irritated skin on my leg,so went to boker shorts and let the bag hang outside the shorts ( works good )
On your operation I suggest finding out how many nerve sparing surgeries your surgeon has done ...there are two nerves you have to save at least one for former sex life to still work!!! I found this out a lil late. A plastic surgeon can restore nerves if he is on standby at time of surgery. He HAS to be there at time of surgery or forget it if your surgeon screws up like mine did.
Good Luck on surgery

I HAVE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ONE OF BEST AROUND ~~~ MAYO CLINIC & HOSP. SCOTTSDALE AZ. ~~~ THEY HAVE A WEB THAT I CAN SEE THE DOCS. & THE ONE THAT IS GOING TO WORK ON ME ~~~ VERY INTERESTING SITE ~~~
~~~ ONE ? ~~~ IS YOUR STOMA EVEN WITH OUTSIDE OF YOUR BODY OR DOE'S IT STICK OUT ANY ~~~
~~~ I BETTER LET YOU GET BACK ON TRACTOR
~~~ THANKS AGAIN ~~~ HECTOR
Hi Hector just getting ready to go for a motorcycle ride.
Stoma sticks out approx 1" tell them not to make it to short or you will have trouble getting the pouch to seal around it...everybody that I have heard from says 1" Don't go buying a bunch of pouches at first because stoma will shrink in diameter after awhile mine went from 7/8" to 3/4" My pouches are all precut to size so all I have to do is slap one on,made by Hollister
#2 ~~~ IS YOUR STOMA SENSITIVE TO TOUCH
#3 ~~~ 1" FOR STOMA TO STICK OUT SEEMS LIKE ALOT, & HOW DOE'S THE POUCH SEAL AROUND STOMA, VERSUS IT BEING FLUSH WITH OUTSIDE OF BODY
#4 ~~~ AFTER SURG. DID YOU HAVE ANY LASTING PAIN OR DO NOW HAVE ANY PAIN
Hi Hector
Had pain for awhile maybe 1st week after that it started getting bettter. And sensitive No WAY slap the b-jesus out of ot if you want it has no feeling. My hollister pouches have seal on them that expands around stoma as soon as moisture from stoma contacts it. So if that stoma doesnt stick out far enough then you will have trouble getting it to seal and stay sealed. :oops:
OK gang jump in here and give Hector your pearls of wisdom :) I know there are a bunch of you that know far more than I do,after all I was studying the nurses during all this procedure. :wink:
By the way Hector is scheduled to join us in ostomy land in Aug.
I was told by the urostomy nurse not to let the daytime drainage bag get over 1/3 full. I was draining all of the time. Yes, it was nice not to have to drain the night bag. I have a different set-up now and like it much better (catheter directly into the kidney hooked up to a leg bag). Only problem is chronic infections that we are battling at the present time.
Take care everyone.
