Traveling with a Koch Pouch

I have had a Koch Pouch for more than 35 years, and have enjoyed a very active lifestyle (travel, skiing, running, etc.). However, the one activity I have avoided is camping. I am considering walking the Camino de Santiago and will often be in situations where there are no restroom facilities. The walk will be at least a 4-6 week adventure. I am seeking suggestions about how to handle a Koch Pouch (irrigation, cleaning catheter, etc.) without restroom facilities for extended periods of time. Thanks.

Good Morning Darrell;
I do not have a Koch Pouch so I really do not have a lot of info for you on that subject, However I am an Irrigator and probably have some of the same issues as you have with the irrigation aspects.
Let me suggest that you repost this question also on the General Ostomy Issues Forum as I think you will reach more folks who go camping and spend a lot of time outdoors and may be able to give you some help.

Darrell, although I have not had an adventure like this (I have a BCIR), here are my thoughts: I would bring two catheters, a syringe for flushing the catheter, sufficient lube, an antibiotic (in case you get pouchitis) and plastic bags to store your catheter until you can clean it. It might be easier to “empty” using the standing or kneeling position, whatever works best for you. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and use “safe” water to irrigate your pouch and clean your catheter. Also, bring along any diet supplements (iron, B-12, etc.) if you need to use them. Happy camping!

Thanks Bill. Great suggestions. I believe cleaning catheters will be the biggest challenge.
